Key Features

  • Genuine HPE part, listed by part number in HPE's own AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide.
  • 10G SFP+ short-reach optic for multimode fibre, with a duplex LC connector at 850 nm.
  • 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4, both confirmed against HPE's own figures.
  • Rated for the industrial temperature range, -40 to +85 C, which the LR part in the same family is not.
  • Requires 1 W, so a densely populated switch should have its optic power budget checked.
  • Digital optical monitoring is supported.
  • Multimode only. The single-mode 10G part is J9151E and the two do not interchange.
  • D is the current revision; the A revision was the legacy HPE X132 part and is marked end of sale in HPE's guide.
  • HPE publishes no warranty term and no weight for this optic.

Key Specifications

  • Form factor: SFP+

  • Media and connector: Multimode fibre, duplex LC (PC or UPC)
  • Wavelength: 850 nm
  • Reach: 400 m on OM4 and 300 m on OM3, both confirmed. HPE also publishes 82 m, 66 m, 33 m and 26 m figures
  • Required power: 1 W
  • Operating temperature: Industrial, -40 to +85 C
  • Digital optical monitoring: Supported
  • Not published by HPE: Weight and warranty term

What this optic is

A 10 Gbps SFP+ transceiver for multimode fibre at 850 nm, on a duplex LC connector that HPE specifies as PC or UPC polish. HPE prints the shorthand SR for the optic type; the standard reading of that alongside the published wavelength, media and rate is 10GBASE-SR. It draws 1 W and supports digital optical monitoring. The pairing to get right is the fibre: this is a multimode part and its single-mode counterpart is J9151E, an LR optic at 1310 nm rated to 10 km. Multimode and single-mode optics are not interchangeable in either direction and both ends of a link have to be the same type.

Reach by fibre grade

HPE lists six distances for this part - 400 m, 300 m, 82 m and 66 m on 50/125 micron fibre, and 33 m and 26 m on 62.5/125 micron - against modal bandwidths that include 4700, 2000, 500 and 200 MHz*km. Two of those pairings are confirmed and are the ones quoted here: 300 m on OM3, which HPE's own product name states, and 400 m on OM4 at the highest modal bandwidth. The pairing of the four shorter distances to specific OM2 and OM1 grades did not reproduce identically across independent reads of HPE's page, so it is not asserted. If a run is planned on OM1 or OM2, size it from HPE's table directly rather than from any listing.

Industrial temperature

This optic carries an industrial temperature rating of -40 to +85 C, and that is a genuine difference from its single-mode sibling rather than a marketing line: the LR part J9151E is rated commercial, 0 to 70 C. Where the switch lives in a cabinet on a factory floor, in an unconditioned roof space or in a kerbside enclosure, the difference decides which of the two will survive a summer. Both parts draw 1 W and both support DOM, so the temperature rating and the fibre type are the two axes that separate them. In an air-conditioned comms room neither rating is a constraint.

Check the switch first

No compatibility list is published on this page, and that is deliberate rather than lazy. HPE does maintain a per-switch matrix in its AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide, but two independently worded reads of the same page returned different lists, and a compatibility claim that is wrong in either direction costs a return and an outage window. What we will say is how to settle it: HPE's transceiver guide is organised by switch series, so look up the switch rather than the optic, and check whether the platform lists this part number. Ordering a genuine HPE part number and checking it against HPE's own guide is the shortest route to a link that comes up first time, and it is what we sell here.

Revisions

In HPE's current transceiver guide this optic appears twice: as J9150A, the legacy HPE X132 10G SFP+ LC SR part, marked with an end-of-sale asterisk, and as J9150D under the Aruba name, carrying no such marking and shipping now. The rated values are identical between the two - 850 nm, 1 W, industrial temperature - so the letter denotes a build and branding generation rather than an optical change. One thing worth knowing when comparing supplier offers: J9150C does not appear in HPE's current guide at all, so a supplier offering a J9150C is offering something HPE does not currently list.
