Copper and fibre

This card carries 20 copper ports of 10/100/1000BASE-T with PoE+ alongside four SFP+ ports running at 1G or 10GbE, 24 ports in total from a single slot. The mix is the point: a floor that needs powered access ports and a pair of 10G fibre links home can take both from one card rather than spending two slots. The four SFP+ ports do not deliver PoE, which is worth stating because the card is described as a PoE+ module - the power is on the copper only. The card most easily confused with this one is J9986A, which is 24 copper ports with no fibre whatever, and the port counts must never be copied between them.

5400R zl2 only

This is a v3 zl2 module and it fits the HPE Aruba Networking 5400R zl2 chassis only: the 5406R zl2 sold as J9821A, the 5412R zl2 sold as J9822A, and the bundles built on them. HPE rules the older chassis out in as many words - the v3 modules are only supported on the 5400R zl2 Switch Series, and they are not supported on the 5400 zl and 8200 zl switch series. The generation designator is the part of the name to check on a repeat order, because HPE also notes that v1 modules are not supported on the 5400R zl2, so the slots are not generation-agnostic in either direction. A module ordered for the wrong chassis generation is a module that cannot be used.

PoE from the chassis

No PoE wattage appears on this page because HPE publishes none for the card. On the 5400R zl2 the PoE budget is a chassis property, drawn from the chassis power supplies at 700 W, 1100 W or 2750 W depending on what is fitted, and shared out across every card in the enclosure. HPE publishes only platform-level figures: up to 30 W per port under IEEE 802.3at and up to 288 ports of PoE+ across a full chassis. So the sizing question is what the chassis supplies can carry across every card together, not what this card can deliver on its own, and any per-module PoE watt figure on another listing is not a manufacturer number.

Hot swap

The module is hot-swappable. HPE's wording is that one module can be replaced with another while the switch is still powered on, without interrupting the operation of the rest of the switch ports, and the QuickSpecs extend that to dissimilar modules and to power supplies in a redundant configuration. On a chassis carrying a floor's worth of access ports that is the difference between a card swap at lunchtime and an evening outage. It is a zl2 property rather than a family-wide one, and it should not be assumed of every Aruba module: the JL083A uplink module is not hot-swappable on the 3810M at all.

Four things HPE does not publish for this module are worth naming, because their absence here is deliberate. There are no physical dimensions and no net weight: the v3 zl2 modules installation guide has no physical specification table, HPE's QuickSpecs give chassis dimensions only, and distributor shipping weights are packaging figures rather than manufacturer data. There is no per-module power draw or heat dissipation figure either - HPE gives those for the chassis, not the card. And there is no box-contents list on HPE's store page or in the installation guide, so no packing list is published on this page.
