Key Features

  • Fits the HPE Aruba 5400R zl2 chassis only. HPE explicitly rules out the 5400 zl and 8200 zl series.
  • 24 ports of 10/100/1000BASE-T, all PoE+ capable to IEEE 802.3at at up to 30 W per port.
  • There are no SFP or SFP+ ports on this module. It is copper only.
  • MACsec is supported and is in HPE's own product name for the part, which our live title drops.
  • Hot-swappable: one module can be replaced with another while the switch stays powered and the other ports keep running.
  • This is the v3 generation. HPE states v1 modules are not supported on the 5400R zl2 at all.
  • No per-module PoE budget exists. On the 5400R zl2 PoE power comes from the chassis supplies.
  • Operating range 0 to 45 C, with a non-operating range of -40 to 70 C, published per module by HPE.
  • Covered by the Limited Lifetime Warranty HPE prints for the 5400R zl2 series.

Key Specifications

  • Module type: v3 zl2 line card for the 5400R zl2 chassis
  • Host platforms: 5406R zl2 (J9821A) and 5412R zl2 (J9822A) and related bundles. NOT 5400 zl or 8200 zl
  • Ports: 24 x 10/100/1000BASE-T PoE+. No SFP or SFP+ ports
  • PoE: IEEE 802.3at PoE+ capable, up to 30 W per port. Budget comes from the chassis supplies
  • MACsec: Supported
  • Hot swap: Supported, without interrupting the rest of the switch
  • Operating temperature: 0 to 45 C (32 to 113 F) operating; -40 to 70 C (-40 to 158 F) non-operating
  • Warranty: Limited Lifetime Warranty, the term HPE prints for the 5400R zl2 series
  • Not published by HPE: Dimensions, weight, per-module power draw and package contents

What this module is

A 24-port copper line card for the 5400R zl2 chassis, every port 10/100/1000BASE-T and every port PoE+ capable to IEEE 802.3at at up to 30 W. There is no fibre on it at all - no SFP slots and no SFP+ - which is the difference between this part and J9990A, the module in the same family that trades four copper ports for four 1G/10GbE SFP+ ports. That distinction is not a titling quirk on our side; they are genuinely different cards and the port counts must never be copied between them. MACsec is supported and appears in HPE's own product name, which is the feature separating this card from the non-MACsec v3 siblings.

5400R zl2 only

This is a v3 zl2 module and it fits the HPE Aruba Networking 5400R zl2 chassis only: the 5406R zl2 sold as J9821A, the 5412R zl2 sold as J9822A, and the bundles built on them. HPE rules the older chassis out in as many words - the v3 modules are only supported on the 5400R zl2 Switch Series, and they are not supported on the 5400 zl and 8200 zl switch series. The generation designator is the part of the name to check on a repeat order, because HPE also notes that v1 modules are not supported on the 5400R zl2, so the slots are not generation-agnostic in either direction. A module ordered for the wrong chassis generation is a module that cannot be used.

PoE from the chassis

There is no PoE wattage on this page because there is no per-module PoE budget to publish. On the 5400R zl2 the PoE power is a chassis property: it comes from the chassis power supplies, rated 700 W, 1100 W or 2750 W depending on which are fitted, and it is shared out across whatever cards are in the slots. HPE publishes platform-level figures only, rating the system at up to 30 W per port under 802.3at and up to 288 ports of PoE+ chassis-wide. So the planning question is not what this card can deliver but what the chassis supplies can, across every card in it. Any per-module PoE wattage seen on a competing listing is not an HPE figure.

Hot swap

This module is hot-swappable, and HPE's wording is worth having exactly: one module can be replaced with another while the switch is still powered on, without interrupting the operation of the rest of the switch ports. In a chassis carrying several cards that turns a failed line card into a slot-level repair during a working day rather than an outage window for the whole switch. HPE's QuickSpecs add that dissimilar modules, and power supplies in a redundant configuration, can be added or swapped without interrupting the network. Note that this is a zl2 property and not a family-wide one: the JL083A module on the 3810M is not hot-swappable.

Not published

Four things HPE does not publish for this module are worth naming, because their absence here is deliberate. There are no physical dimensions and no net weight: the v3 zl2 modules installation guide has no physical specification table, HPE's QuickSpecs give chassis dimensions only, and distributor shipping weights are packaging figures rather than manufacturer data. There is no per-module power draw or heat dissipation figure either - HPE gives those for the chassis, not the card. And there is no box-contents list on HPE's store page or in the installation guide, so no packing list is published on this page.
