What this PDU is
The AP8831 is APC's Metered Rack PDU, 2G, 0U, 15A, 100-120V, 10 NEMA 5-15R outlets. It is a metered unit, which means a local digital display and network metering, but no per-outlet switching. A rack PDU is the last link in the power chain and the one most often specified by habit. It decides how many devices a circuit can actually feed, whether you can see what they are drawing, and whether a hung box can be rebooted without somebody driving to the site. Getting the class right at order time is cheaper than discovering later that the rack has no metering, or that it has switching nobody needed.
Input and current rating
Input is 15 A at 100 V / 120 V, through a NEMA 5-15P plug on a 10 ft (2.9 m) cord. Maximum output is 1440 VA. Those two current figures catch people out. The nameplate rating is what the plug and the internal path are built for; the derated figure is what North American practice allows you to draw continuously, and it is the one your circuit design and your capacity planning should use. Size the PDU to the breaker feeding it, not to the number of things you want to plug in. Outlets are cheap; amps are not, and a PDU with spare sockets on a full circuit is a trip waiting to happen.
Outlet configuration
The AP8831 provides 10 outlets: 10 x NEMA 5-15R. Check the receptacle types against the cords you actually own before ordering. C13 and C19 are not interchangeable, and neither are NEMA 5-15R and 5-20R in the direction that matters: a 5-20P plug will not enter a 5-15R socket. Where a rack mixes IEC and NEMA equipment, it is usually cleaner to standardise the PDU on the majority type and adapt the handful of outliers with proper cords rather than adapters. We can check the outlet mix against your equipment list before you order if that would help.
Rack mounting
This is a zero-U vertical unit. It mounts in the rear channel of the cabinet and uses no usable rack height at all, which is why the tall power strips are the default in any cabinet that is short of Us. Dimensions are 35.5 in (902 mm) H x 2.2 in (55 mm) W x 1.7 in (44 mm) D. Net weight is 9 lb (4.08 kg). Note that the dimensions are printed height-first, so the long figure is the vertical body length rather than a rack width. Zero-U mounting sounds like a detail and is not. In a full cabinet it is often the difference between fitting the PDU and giving up a server slot for it, and it puts the outlets alongside the equipment rather than at one end of the rack.
Metering and control
It can be monitored through Web, Telnet, SNMP, SSH, or EcoStruxure interfaces. Local communication can be established through the serial port, and remote communication through the network port. The USB and Communication ports enable data transfer for future expansion options. The liquid crystal display (LCD) and input buttons allow you to monitor current, power, and voltage measurements of the Rack PDU. What that buys you in practice is a PDU with its own address, its own alert thresholds and its own log, so a circuit approaching its limit shows up before it trips rather than afterwards.
Environment and siting
Operating temperature is 23 to 140 F (-5 to 60 C). That range is wider than most rack equipment tolerates, which is the point: a PDU sits in the hot aisle side of the cabinet and has to keep working when the surrounding air is doing something the servers would object to. It is still worth siting sensibly. A strip pressed against a blanking panel in a badly baffled cabinet runs hotter than the room does, and a PDU running hot is usually the first sign that the cabinet's airflow needs attention.
In the box
APC lists the following in the carton for this part number: Installation guide, Rack Mounting brackets, Serial configuration cable and Safety guide. Warranty is 24 months. Carton contents vary more across this range than you would expect from one product family, and they are not safely copied sideways between part numbers, so the list above is what the current sheet for this exact model prints rather than a tidier list assembled from a sibling. Power cords for the connected equipment are not included on any model in this range; budget for those separately if the rack is a new build.
For a rack that needs 10 outlets of metered distribution at 15 A, the APC AP8831 is the right part and we hold it in stock. Contact us to learn more or secure this solution for your business today.
