Key Features

  • Genuine HPE part, listed by part number in HPE's own AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide.
  • 1G SFP long-reach optic for single-mode fibre, with a duplex LC connector at 1310 nm.
  • Reaches 10 km on 9/125 um single-mode fibre.
  • Digital optical monitoring is supported, so the switch can read transmit and receive power off the module.
  • Single-mode only. The multimode part in the same family is J4858D and the two do not interchange.
  • This is a 1 Gbps optic. It will not negotiate 10G in an SFP+ port.
  • D is the current generation of this optic; the C revision was branded HPE X121 1G SFP LC LX.
  • HPE publishes no power draw, no operating temperature and no warranty term against this part.

Key Specifications

  • Form factor: SFP
  • Data rate: 1 Gbps
  • Optic type: LX in HPE's shorthand, the standard reading of which is 1000BASE-LX
  • Media and connector: Single-mode fibre, duplex LC
  • Wavelength: 1310 nm
  • Reach: 10 km on 9/125 um single-mode fibre
  • Digital optical monitoring: Supported
  • Not published by HPE: Power draw, operating temperature, weight and warranty term

What this optic is

A 1 Gbps SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, transmitting at 1310 nm through a duplex LC connector and rated to 10 km on 9/125 micron fibre. HPE prints the shorthand LX for the optic type; the standard reading of that shorthand alongside HPE's published wavelength, media and rate is 1000BASE-LX. Digital optical monitoring is supported, which is worth more on a long single-mode run than on a patch lead: it lets the switch report received power so a degrading splice or a dirty connector shows up as a falling number rather than as an intermittent link nobody can reproduce.

Not the SX part

The mistake this optic is involved in is being ordered instead of, or alongside, its multimode sibling. J4859D is single-mode at 1310 nm and J4858D is multimode at 850 nm; they are the same form factor with the same connector and they look identical in a rack. Put an LX module on multimode fibre or an SX module on single-mode and the link either fails outright or comes up with an error rate that makes it useless. Both ends of a link also have to match: an SX at one end and an LX at the other will not work. Check which fibre is actually in the duct before ordering, because the pair is not interchangeable in either direction.

Check the switch first

No compatibility list is published on this page, and that is deliberate rather than lazy. HPE does maintain a per-switch matrix in its AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide, but two independently worded reads of the same page returned different lists, and a compatibility claim that is wrong in either direction costs a return and an outage window. What we will say is how to settle it: HPE's transceiver guide is organised by switch series, so look up the switch rather than the optic, and check whether the platform lists this part number. Ordering a genuine HPE part number and checking it against HPE's own guide is the shortest route to a link that comes up first time, and it is what we sell here.

The D revision

The trailing letter denotes a build and branding generation rather than a change in rated optics. D is the current generation of the J4859 line and is the revision HPE lists in its transceiver guide and sells on its own store; the C revision was branded HPE X121 1G SFP LC LX under the pre-Aruba naming. As with the SX part, HPE publishes no supersession sentence that could be reached, and the current guide's 1G SFP page could not be opened to check whether earlier letters carry an end-of-sale marker, so no lifecycle claim is made about a J4859C here. J4859D is the current shipping part number.

Not published

HPE publishes no power draw and no operating temperature classification for this optic. That is a verified absence rather than an oversight: the table in HPE's transceiver guide where the 1G SFP parts live carries columns for product name, DOM, wavelength, fibre mode, fibre diameter, modal bandwidth and transmission distance, and nothing else. No weight is printed for it either, and no warranty term appears on HPE's store page or in the guide. The 10G optics in the same family do carry published power and temperature figures, which is a difference in HPE's documentation practice rather than in the parts.
