Key Features
- Sheetfed one-pass duplex scanner. There is no flatbed; the Flatbed Scanner Dock B12B819011 that adds one is a separate purchase.
- 65 ppm and 130 ipm at 200 and 300 dpi, and Epson quotes that figure for Black-and-White, Colour and Gray alike.
- At 400 and 600 dpi throughput falls to 16 ppm and 32 ipm, the same second tier the DS-970 publishes.
- Peak daily duty cycle of 10,000 sheets, agreed across three separate Epson sources.
- 100-sheet automatic document feeder, the same feeder fitted to the faster DS-970.
- Double-feed detection with Paper Protection. Epson does not name the sensor type for this model.
- Feeds 27 to 413 g/m2, including embossed plastic ID cards to less than 1.24 mm.
- Folded originals up to 11 x 17 inches can be captured through a carrier sheet.
- SuperSpeed USB 3.0 only. No Ethernet and no wireless is fitted, and neither can be added.
- TWAIN and ISIS drivers are both included, so established capture software needs no licensed ISIS add-on.
- ENERGY STAR certified, with the EPA registry record bound to this exact part number.
- Three-year limited warranty in the United States and Canada.

What this scanner is
The DS-870 is the workgroup scanner in Epson's DS range that most buyers should look at first, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste. It is physically the same machine as the DS-970: same chassis at 11.6 by 8.3 by 8.5 inches and 7.9 lb, same colour CIS sensor, same 100-sheet feeder, same 27 to 413 g/m2 media range, same roller kit. The two differ on exactly two numbers, speed and duty cycle, and this one is 65 ppm at 10,000 sheets a day where the DS-970 is 85 ppm at 14,000. If the daily volume does not reach five figures, the extra outlay on the DS-970 buys headroom rather than capability. Like its sibling it is sheetfed only: bound or fragile originals need the optional flatbed dock.
Speed and conditions
Epson's figure for this scanner is 65 ppm and 130 ipm. The spec sheet qualifies both at 200 and 300 dpi and for Black-and-White, Colour and Gray alike, while Epson's product page states the same figures against 300 dpi in all three modes; the two readings agree on the numbers and on the absence of any colour penalty. The ppm figure is simplex and the ipm figure duplex, and since this is a one-pass duplexer the duplex figure is exactly double. Above 300 dpi it drops hard: Epson publishes 16 ppm and 32 ipm at 400 and 600 dpi, so anything captured at high resolution runs at roughly a quarter of the headline rate and should be planned that way.
Duty cycle
Peak daily duty cycle is 10,000 sheets, and unusually for this range that figure is not in dispute: the current spec sheet, the Epson product page and Epson's joint brochure all print it. What has changed is the launch figure. Epson's own press release in January 2019 announced this scanner at 7,000 sheets a day and the rating was revised upward afterwards, so distributor copy carrying 7,000 is quoting a number Epson has superseded. Treat 10,000 as a peak rather than a plan: a scanner run at its ceiling every working day reaches its roller interval sooner, and the roller kit is the consumable that decides the running cost of a machine like this one.
Media and originals
The feeder takes originals from 2 x 2 inches up to 8.5 x 240 inches, with the long-paper limit dropping to 215 inches at 300 dpi, on stock from 27 to 413 g/m2. That upper figure is card, and Epson supports rigid plastic ID cards including embossed ones to less than 1.24 mm thick, which is what allows a mixed stack of letters, receipts and cards to be run in one batch. Folded pages up to 11 x 17 inches can be captured by folding them into a carrier sheet, Epson part B12B819051, which is sold separately. Double-feed detection and Paper Protection are both fitted. Epson names neither sensor type on this model, so the ultrasonic description that appears on the DS-970 page is not carried across here.
Connections fitted
SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is the only interface on this scanner. There is no Ethernet port, no wireless radio and no option slot to add either, which makes this a single-workstation device however many people eventually want to use it. Where a department needs a shared scanner on the network, this part number is the wrong answer and no configuration changes that. Control at the machine is a front panel LCD with push buttons. Epson publishes full electrical figures here that it does not publish for the DS-970: a 100 to 240 V adapter with 24 V output at 2 A, drawing 30 W in operation, 10 W ready, 1.5 W asleep and 0.1 W switched off, in an operating range of 41 to 95 F.
Software and drivers
The bundle is Epson Scan 2 with Epson Document Capture and Document Capture Pro, and driver support covers both TWAIN and ISIS. ISIS is the one to note. Established document-capture platforms frequently speak ISIS and nothing else, and on rival hardware an ISIS driver is often a licensed extra; on this scanner it is included, though Epson's brochure describes it as a web download rather than media in the box. Epson ScanSmart is not part of this bundle and is not offered for the DS business range at all. The operating-system list on the spec sheet is not reproduced here: it reaches Windows 11 but caps macOS at 10.14, and Epson has not re-issued it, so current driver downloads are the reliable check.
Roller kit
The consumable is the roller assembly kit B12B819711, which Epson recommends replacing every 200,000 scans. That part number is shared with the DS-970 and with nothing else in the range, and Epson US publishes two other kits that look interchangeable and are not: B12B819671 for the DS-530 II with the DS-770 II, and B12B819031 for the first-generation DS-530 and DS-770. All three quote a 200,000 interval, so the interval will not distinguish them. There is one further trap, and it is in an Epson document rather than a distributor's: the joint DS-870/DS-970 brochure lists B12B819031 for these two scanners. Epson US's accessory pages, whose compatibility lists name the models explicitly, put B12B819031 on the first-generation machines and B12B819711 here.
