What this printer is

The Epson TM-U295 is a slip printer, and that is a different product class from a receipt printer. It prints on individual forms that an operator hands into the front or the side of the machine - a cheque, a credit card authorisation slip, a multi-part voucher - and it has no roll paper station at all. It cannot print a receipt from a roll, because there is nowhere to put one. Epson markets it as the world's smallest slip printer and positions it for counter and teller stations where space is tight. If you are looking for something to print till receipts, this is the wrong machine and we would rather tell you now.

What is not included

This part number ships without a power supply. That is not an oversight on our part: it is in Epson's own designation for the SKU, which reads 'TM-U295 (272): Serial, w/o PS, ECW'. The printer takes 24 volts DC at around 600 milliamps from an external adapter, and the one you need is the Epson PS-180, part number C32C825341. Without it the printer will not switch on. The second omission catches people even harder: there is no serial cable either, and a standard straight-through RS-232 lead will not work. It needs a NULL MODEM cable, Epson part 03019. A buyer who already owns 'a serial cable' most likely owns the wrong one, plugs it in, and concludes the printer is faulty. Order both with the printer.

Interface and speed

RS-232C serial only, on a D-SUB 25 female connector, plus a modular drawer kick-out for a cash drawer. There is no USB, no parallel, no Ethernet and no wireless on this part number. Many current point-of-sale PCs have no serial port at all, and a USB-to-serial adapter is a support burden rather than a solution, so confirm you have a real RS-232 port before ordering. Worth stating because stock photography for this model circulates in both colours and it is easy to order from a picture. On lifecycle we will be straight with you: Epson publishes no discontinued notice for the TM-U295 and names no successor, so we will not call it discontinued. Nor will we call it current, because absence of a notice is not a statement of currency. This is plainly a legacy design and availability is thin, so if you need several, ask us early.
