Key Features
- Omnidirectional presentation scanner: 20 laser lines in five fields read a code at any angle.
- 1,120 scan lines per second, so an item swiped past the head reads on the first pass.
- Tilting head aims the scan zone at the counter, the conveyor or the operator as the bench requires.
- Reads standard 1D and GS1 DataBar symbologies. It is a laser, so it does not read 2D codes.
- Hands-free on its stand for retail checkout, or picked up for bulky and awkward items.
- Host powered over the USB cable in this configuration; no external power supply needed.
- Rated to survive 1.2 m (4 ft) drops, and sealed against airborne particulate contaminants.
- Multi-interface body: USB, RS-232, Keyboard Wedge and IBM 468xx are all set by the cable fitted.
- User-replaceable cable, so a change of host does not mean a change of scanner.
- Compact at 105 x 102 x 150 mm and 400 g, taking little counter depth.
- Backed by a three-year Honeywell factory warranty.
- Assembled in Mexico, which is the TAA-designated build for US federal and GSA business.

Presentation Scanning
The Honeywell Orbit 7120 (MK7120-31A38-N) is a hands-free presentation scanner rather than a handheld. It sits on the counter throwing an omnidirectional pattern of twenty laser lines in five fields, so a barcode passing through the zone reads regardless of how the item is held. That is the practical difference from a single-line handheld: an operator never has to aim, only to move the item. At 1,120 scan lines per second it keeps pace with a fast checkout. The head tilts, so the scan zone can be pointed at the counter surface, at a conveyor, or up towards the operator.
Laser, Not an Imager
The Orbit 7120 is a laser scanner. It reads standard 1D barcodes and GS1 DataBar, and it does not read 2D symbologies: no QR codes, no Data Matrix, no PDF417, and nothing off a phone screen. That matters more now than it did when this scanner was designed, because mobile coupons, loyalty codes and digital tickets all arrive as 2D codes on a display. If any part of the workload involves scanning a screen, this is the wrong scanner and an area imager such as the Voyager XP 1470g is the right one. For pure 1D retail and stockroom work the Orbit remains fast and hard to beat on price.
Cable and Interface
The Orbit 7120 body is multi-interface: USB, RS-232, Keyboard Wedge and IBM 468xx over RS-485 are all supported, and which one is active is decided entirely by the cable fitted. This part number ships with a 2.8 metre (9.2 ft) straight USB Type A cable, so out of the box it is a USB scanner drawing its power from the host port with no external supply. Cables are user-replaceable, so moving the scanner to a serial or wedge host later means buying a cable rather than a scanner. Note that RS-232 and some Keyboard Wedge configurations do require an external power supply.
Build and Placement
At 105 by 102 by 150 mm and 400 grams the Orbit takes little counter depth, which is the constraint that usually decides where a presentation scanner can go. It is rated to survive 1.2 metre drops and Honeywell describes the housing as sealed to resist airborne particulate contaminants. Honeywell publishes no IP figure for this model in its datasheet, so this listing does not quote one. Operating range is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius at 5 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity, which suits an indoor counter, service desk or light industrial bench rather than a loading dock.
Current Product
Unlike several scanners of the same vintage, the Orbit 7120 is not on Honeywell's discontinued products list. Honeywell still publishes a live product page for it, and its contemporaries the MS7600, MS7820 and MS9520 are all listed as end of life while this one is not, so its absence is not an indexing gap. That is worth knowing before standardising a fleet on it: this is a mature platform still in production, not run-out stock, and Honeywell backs it with a full three-year factory warranty rather than the two years often quoted for it.
Ordering Notes
Part number MK7120-31A38-N is the black USB kit, assembled in Mexico. Mexico is a TAA-designated country, which makes this the build to quote on US federal, state and GSA business where the Trade Agreements Act applies. Distributor sources disagree on whether the 45-45619 mounting plate ships in this kit, and Honeywell publishes no packing list that settles it, so this listing does not claim one. Confirm with us before ordering if the mount matters.
For retail checkouts, service counters, pharmacies and stockrooms that scan 1D barcodes all day and want the operator's hands free, the Honeywell Orbit 7120 MK7120-31A38-N is a fast, durable and well-supported choice. Contact us to learn more or secure this solution for your business today.
