Key Features

  • Genuine HPE part, listed by part number in HPE's own AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide.
  • 1G SFP short-reach optic for multimode fibre, with a duplex LC connector at 850 nm.
  • Reaches 550 m on 50/125 um OM2 fibre at 500 MHz*km, and 275 m on 62.5/125 um OM1 at 200 MHz*km.
  • Digital optical monitoring is supported, so the switch can read transmit and receive power off the module.
  • This is a 1 Gbps optic. It will not negotiate 10G in an SFP+ port.
  • Multimode only. The single-mode part in the same family is J4859D and the two do not interchange.
  • D is the current generation of this optic; the C revision was branded HPE X121 1G SFP LC SX.
  • HPE publishes no power draw, no operating temperature and no warranty term against this part.

Key Specifications

  • Form factor: SFP
  • Data rate: 1 Gbps
  • Optic type: SX in HPE's shorthand, the standard reading of which is 1000BASE-SX
  • Media and connector: Multimode fibre, duplex LC
  • Wavelength: 850 nm
  • Reach: 550 m on 50/125 um at 500 MHz*km; 500 m at 400 MHz*km; 275 m on 62.5/125 um at 200 MHz*km; 220 m at 160 MHz*km
  • Digital optical monitoring: Supported
  • Not published by HPE: Power draw, operating temperature, weight and warranty term

What this optic is

A 1 Gbps SFP transceiver for multimode fibre, transmitting at 850 nm through a duplex LC connector. HPE prints the shorthand SX for this optic type rather than the IEEE string, and the standard reading of that shorthand together with HPE's published wavelength, media and rate is 1000BASE-SX. It supports digital optical monitoring, so a switch can read the module's transmit and receive power and temperature rather than guessing at a marginal link. What it is not is a 10G part and not a single-mode part: it runs at one gigabit, on multimode fibre, and neither of those is a setting.

Reach by fibre grade

HPE publishes four reach figures for this optic rather than one, because the distance depends on the grade of fibre in the ground. On 50/125 micron fibre it reaches 550 m at a modal bandwidth of 500 MHz*km, which is OM2, and 500 m at 400 MHz*km. On 62.5/125 micron it reaches 275 m at 200 MHz*km, which is OM1, and 220 m at 160 MHz*km. Worth knowing before comparing listings: HPE's own marketing name for this part says 500m OM2 while HPE's own specification table rates it at 550 m on OM2, with 500 m belonging to the lower bandwidth grade. HPE is inconsistent with itself there, so the full set is quoted rather than the name.

Check the switch first

No compatibility list is published on this page, and that is deliberate rather than lazy. HPE does maintain a per-switch matrix in its AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide, but two independently worded reads of the same page returned different lists, and a compatibility claim that is wrong in either direction costs a return and an outage window. What we will say is how to settle it: HPE's transceiver guide is organised by switch series, so look up the switch rather than the optic, and check whether the platform lists this part number. Ordering a genuine HPE part number and checking it against HPE's own guide is the shortest route to a link that comes up first time, and it is what we sell here.

The D revision

The trailing letter on HPE optics denotes a build and branding generation rather than a change in the rated optics. D is the current generation of the J4858 line and is what HPE lists in the transceiver guide and sells on its own store; the C revision was branded HPE X121 1G SFP LC SX and belongs to the pre-Aruba naming. HPE publishes no explicit supersession sentence for this part that we could reach, and the current guide's 1G SFP page could not be opened to check whether the earlier letters carry an end-of-sale marker, so nothing is asserted about the lifecycle of a J4858C. What is confirmed is that J4858D is the current shipping part.

Not published

Four things a buyer might expect on this page are absent, and each is a verified absence in HPE's own documents rather than a gap here. Table 41 of the transceiver guide, which is where the 1G SFP optics live, has columns for product name, DOM, wavelength, fibre mode, fibre diameter, modal bandwidth and transmission distance, and no others - so there is no power draw figure and no operating temperature classification to quote. No weight is printed anywhere. And no warranty statement appears on HPE's store page for this part or in the guide, which is a specification document with no warranty section at all.
