End of life. Polycom has discontinued the VVX 311, and this phone is past END OF SUPPORT as well as end of sale. Poly publishes the schedule: end of sale 31 March 2020, last time ship Q2 2020, end of support Q4 2025. Every one of those dates is now behind us. The named successors were the VVX 250 and the VVX 350, both of which are themselves end of sale, so the live replacement path is the Edge E Series. Barcode Printer Shop does not currently stock a successor mapped to this part number, so none is linked here. What is still true: the last firmware, UC Software 6.4.6 of November 2023, does list the VVX 301 and VVX 311 among supported devices, so a working unit runs supported-era software. There will simply be no further releases and no support entitlement. Remaining stock is sold for fleet matching, replacement units and validated workflows where requalifying a new model is not practical.

The licence

This is the Microsoft edition and the licence is what you are paying for. Poly's own description string reads Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync Edition VVX 311 6-Line Desktop Phone with HD Voice GigE and Polycom UCS SfB/Lync License Ships without Power Supply, and the datasheet ordering table carries the short form as VVX 311 Skype for Business, POE. Of the five Poly desk phone part numbers on this brand page, this is the only one for which a Skype for Business claim is true. The hardware supports either software load, but it is this suffix that carries the paid entitlement, and a phone bought on another suffix does not acquire it by reconfiguration.

No power supply

The second difference is what is missing from the carton. This part number ships without a power supply, stated twice in Poly's own strings and confirmed by the token POE at the end of the datasheet ordering line. On any 802.3af switch port that is entirely fine: the VVX 311 is a Class 2 device and runs completely from Power over Ethernet, so the phone is complete as delivered. On a port with no PoE it will not power on at all, and the fix is a separately purchased 48 V DC adapter at 0.3 A. That is the single most likely support call this SKU generates, and it is worth resolving on the order rather than on the desk. The sibling 2200-48350-001 is the bundled-adapter version.

Skype for Business today

One caveat belongs on this page and it is not in Poly's literature, because it comes from Microsoft rather than from Poly. Skype for Business Online has been retired. The licence carried by this part number therefore has value against an on-premises Skype for Business or Lync server and not against a cloud tenancy, and Poly's own platform record for the VVX 311 reads openSIP or Skype for Business without any online qualifier. If the estate has already moved to Microsoft Teams, this is not the phone and there is no Teams variant of it at any part number. If an on-premises SfB or Lync server is still running, this SKU is the correctly licensed handset for it.

What it lacks

The VVX 311 has no USB port. Three separate passes across two Poly documents returned nothing for USB, and one of those documents lists USB among its explicitly absent sections. That rules out a USB headset and any USB Wi-Fi accessory, because there is nothing to attach one to. There is no Bluetooth and no Wi-Fi either. The screen is a 3.2 in backlit 8-level greyscale LCD at 208 by 104 pixels, and any listing calling it colour has borrowed that from a VVX 350. There is no expansion module support: a datasheet sentence about readiness for future modules is a marketing promise about the series, not a shipping capability on this phone.

Not antimicrobial

A claim to remove rather than repeat. The VVX 311 is not antimicrobial and carries no Microban protection. Asked explicitly whether the words antimicrobial or Microban appear anywhere in the Polycom VVX 300, 301, 310 and 311 datasheet, the answer was that they do not, and a second pass of the same document surfaced no such text either. This phone predates the programme entirely. Microban does appear on Poly's later hardware, including the VVX 350 and the Edge E models, which is almost certainly where the claim on competing VVX 311 listings originates. For a clinical, food handling or shared-desk requirement where surface treatment is a specification rather than a preference, this is the wrong phone.

Audio and headsets

The audio is what the VVX line was bought for and it holds up. HD Voice runs to 7 kHz on all three paths - speaker, handset and headset - and Polycom Acoustic Clarity provides full-duplex hands-free conversation, so both ends can speak at once without the speakerphone clipping. Codecs are G.711 in both A-law and mu-law, G.729AB, G.722, G.722.1 and iLBC; there is no OPUS on this generation. Headsets attach through the dedicated RJ-9 port, and the phone is electronic hook switch capable, so a wireless headset system with a desk phone base can answer and end calls remotely once the correct EHS cable for the model is fitted.

Buying it in 2026

This phone is past end of support, not merely end of sale. Poly's schedule gives end of sale as 31 March 2020 and end of support as Q4 2025, and both dates are behind us, which is why the notice sits above the specifications rather than beneath them. The mitigating fact is genuine: the last firmware, UC Software 6.4.6 of November 2023, still lists the VVX 301 and VVX 311 as supported devices, so an installed handset runs supported-era software. What has ended is new releases and support entitlement. Buy this part number to add a correctly licensed handset to an on-premises Skype for Business estate that already runs them. Do not start a deployment on it.
