Four inches, not three

The ZQ521 prints a full four inches wide, up to 4.09 inches of print on media as wide as 4.45 inches. That is worth stating plainly because the ZQ500 family contains a three-inch model, the ZQ511, and the two part numbers differ by one character. A four-inch mobile printer is bought to produce the same shipping and compliance labels a desktop unit produces, on the move: a full four-inch address label, a GS1 logistics label, a returns label written at the customer's door. A three-inch printer cannot make those. If the labels in question are receipts or narrow price tickets, the ZQ511 is cheaper, lighter and the better buy.

Wireless fitted

This part number carries Bluetooth 4.1 in both Classic and Low Energy flavours, plus a USB 2.0 full-speed on-the-go port on a Micro-AB connector. Bluetooth is how it pairs with the handheld or phone that drives it, and BLE support is what makes setup and configuration from a mobile app practical. What this part number does not have is Wi-Fi. Zebra builds an 802.11ac version of the ZQ521 and it is a different part number; the radio is not a card and cannot be fitted afterwards. For a printer that follows one operator and one device around a site, Bluetooth is the right answer and the cheaper one. For a fleet managed centrally over the network, it is not.

Battery and charging

The printer ships with a removable PowerPrecision+ smart battery: two cells, 7.4 volts nominal, 3250 mAh, rechargeable and user-swappable. Smart is not marketing here, because the pack reports its own state of health and charge to the printer and to Zebra's management tools, which is what makes it possible to retire a tired battery before it strands an operator mid-shift. An extended 6500 mAh four-cell pack is available for higher duty cycles. The one thing to plan for is that no charger and no AC adapter are in the box, so a first deployment needs a charging solution ordered alongside it.

In the box

Zebra's own box list for this printer is the printer, a Quick Start Guide, a Regulatory Guide, a Safety Guide, the battery and a belt clip. Read that list for what it does not contain: there is no charger, no AC adapter and no USB cable. The battery arrives with the printer, so the unit can be charged and used, but only once something exists to charge it with. Zebra sells single and multi-bay chargers and vehicle adapters for exactly this, and which one is right depends on whether the printer comes back to a bench overnight or lives in a van. It is the most common second line on a ZQ order and the most commonly forgotten one.

Built for the field

This is a printer designed to be dropped. Zebra rates it for multiple drops from 6.6 ft to concrete and 1,300 free falls from 3.3 ft, seals it to IP54 against dust and splashing water, and certifies it to MIL-STD 810G for drop, shock and vibration. The operating range runs from minus 4 to 131 F, which covers a chilled distribution centre at one end and a parked delivery van in summer at the other. At 1.73 lb with the standard battery it is light enough to wear on a belt for a shift, and the dual-sided tear bar means a label tears cleanly whichever way the operator pulls it.

Media and languages

Media runs from 2.0 to 4.45 inches wide on a roll up to 2.24 inches in outside diameter, with a 0.75 inch core as standard and a 0.5 inch core supported as an option. That roll capacity is the real constraint of any body-worn printer and is worth doing the arithmetic on before deployment, because it sets how many labels an operator carries between reloads. The printer speaks CPCL and ZPL, with ZBI 2.x for on-printer logic and ESC-POS available as a post-sale download, so it can take over from an older mobile printer without the application being rewritten. This build carries the linered platen; linerless is a separate part number.
