What this module is
A 10GBASE-T transceiver in an SFP+ package, which turns one SFP+ cage on a switch into an RJ45 copper port running at 10 Gbps. The use for it is specific: a switch whose uplinks are all SFP+ needs to reach a device that only has copper 10G - a server NIC, a storage head, a firewall - and running fibre to it is not practical. It is the one part in this family where HPE prints the IEEE designation verbatim rather than a shorthand, so 10GBASE-T is HPE's own word for it. It is a copper part with no wavelength, no fibre grade and no optical budget to plan around.
The 30 metre ceiling
Thirty metres is a hard limit and it is the specification most likely to cause a return. HPE explains why in its transceiver guide: a fixed 10GBASE-T switch port will run the 100 m that IEEE 802.3ae allows, while the SFP+ module version is limited to 30 m because of the power available to a transceiver in a cage. That sentence is written in HPE's guide against the earlier JL563A and JL563B revisions, so it is context for this part rather than a JL563C specification, but it is the reason 30 m appears in HPE's own product name for this module. A site that cables a 60 m run and expects it to link will be disappointed.
Cabling and interference
HPE's stated requirement is Cat6A as a minimum for proper 10G speeds, with shielded 6a recommended to eliminate EMI issues. Both halves of that matter. Cat6 or Cat5e will not carry 10GBASE-T reliably at any useful distance, so an existing cable plant is often the real constraint rather than the module. And 10GBASE-T over unshielded cable in a dense bundle is prone to alien crosstalk, which shows up as errors and retransmissions rather than as a dead link, making it a genuinely awkward fault to chase. Where the cabling is old, fibre and an optical module is usually the cheaper answer than recabling.
Check the switch first
Before ordering this module, confirm that the switch supports 10GBASE-T SFP+ modules at all. This is the transceiver type most often refused by a switch platform, and for a real reason: the module draws more power than an optical SFP+ and some cages will not supply it, or will supply it only in a limited number of slots. HPE publishes no supported-platform list for JL563C that we could verify, so no compatibility claim is made on this page in either direction. Look the switch up in HPE's transceiver guide, and if the platform is not listed, ask before ordering rather than after.
Under-documented by HPE
This part is materially less documented by HPE than its fibre siblings, and it is worth saying so rather than filling the gaps. JL563C has no specification row in any edition of the AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver Guide that could be reached - editions 9, 12, 17 and the current edition 25 were all checked - and neither HPE's store page nor its data-sheet landing page prints specifications. So there is no published power draw, no operating temperature classification and no DOM support statement for this revision. JL563A and JL563B do appear in the guide, and HPE publishes no rated difference between the letters.
