Canon U.S.A. has discontinued the imageFORMULA DR-M140, and the model Canon replaced it with, the DR-M140II, reads Discontinued on Canon's own page as well, so there is no current in-family upgrade path to offer. Dual paper path

The DR-M140 has two selectable paper paths and much of its specification depends on which one is in use. The U-turn path takes 7 to 32 lb bond and documents from 2.9 inches long; the straight-through path takes 7 to 68 lb bond and documents from 2.1 inches, and it is the path that handles embossed plastic cards, thick stock and long documents. Canon Europe states the same split in metric: 27 to 128 g/m² on the U-turn path against 27 to 255 g/m² straight through. Any description of this scanner that gives a single media-weight range is describing half of it. The straight path also needs clearance behind the unit, because paper leaves the back rather than curling into the output tray.

Speed and its condition

Canon rates the DR-M140 at 40 ppm simplex and 80 ipm duplex, the same in black and white, greyscale and colour alike, and the condition in Canon's own footnote is typical settings, letter-size documents at 200 dpi, portrait feeding direction. This is worth reading against the rest of the range. The DR-C240 that sits below it is faster in mono at 45 ppm and slower in colour at 30 ppm, so the DR-M140 is not simply a step up in speed. What it buys over the DR-C240 is the second paper path, heavier stock on that path and a suggested daily volume half as large again. If throughput alone is the requirement, this range does not ladder the way the model numbers suggest.

Duty cycle

Canon's suggested daily volume for this scanner is 6,000 scans, and it is the only figure in this batch that is clean on every reading: the Canon U.S.A. product page, the Canon U.S.A. specification sheet and Canon Europe all print it, each twice where two passes were taken. That is worth stating plainly, because the other three models in this range each carry either a duty-cycle conflict or a regional variation. Six thousand scans a day is a departmental rating rather than a production one. It suits a back office, a branch, a claims desk or a records room digitising as it goes, and it is not the specification for a centralised scanning bureau running shifts.

Feeder capacity dispute

Canon publishes two different feeder capacities for the DR-M140 and this listing prints neither as fact. The Canon U.S.A. product page says 80 sheets on both readings and Canon Europe agrees at 80 sheets of 80 g/m² stock, but the Canon U.S.A. specification sheet says 50 sheets on both readings, and that sheet is a single-model document rather than a comparison table that could have been misread. Our source priority makes the specification sheet the authority, and here the authority is the source that dissents, which is why the number cannot be settled from published material. Ask Canon to confirm the feeder capacity if it is load-bearing for the workflow.

Operating systems

This is the weakest driver position of the four. Canon U.S.A.'s specification sheet for the DR-M140 is the original launch document and lists Windows XP, Vista and 7; the newer product page lists Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 R2 through 2019 and macOS 10.13 to 10.15. No Canon source lists Windows 11 for this model, and none lists any macOS above Catalina. A buyer on a current Mac or on Windows 11 therefore has no published Canon driver, and that is the single most likely way for this scanner to fail on arrival in a modern office. Confirm the target operating system before ordering rather than after.

Software bundle

Canon U.S.A. lists CaptureOnTouch, CapturePerfect, Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office and Kofax VRS for this model. The ISIS driver is the thing to check: Canon U.S.A.'s own bundled-software line does not name it, and only Canon Europe's specification page does, so a purchase that depends on ISIS should be confirmed with Canon rather than argued from the US sheet. Canon Europe additionally lists ISIS for macOS against this model, which Canon ships for no other scanner in this range and is almost certainly a web error, so it is not repeated here. TWAIN is available on both platforms, and CaptureOnTouch is the supplied scanning front end.

Consumables

The DR-M140 does not share a roller kit with the other Canon scanners here, and that is the trap on this listing. Its exchange roller kit is a feed roller unit plus a retard roller under product code 5972B001, taken from Canon's own DR-M140 reference manual and corroborated by the Canon channel description string against that number. The DR-C240, DR-M160II and DR-M260 use a different family kit, so cross-ordering between them wastes a delivery. Canon states no replacement interval for the DR-M140: the manual gives the part with no page count against it. Because the number reaches us through an aggregator copy of Canon's manual, confirm it with Canon before ordering.

Shape and footprint

The DR-M140 is physically unlike the other three Canon scanners here. It is a flat horizontal unit, 3.7 inches high with the trays closed and 12.3 by 7.1 inches on the desk, weighing 5.7 lb, where the DR-C240, DR-M160II and DR-M260 are all tall vertical units around nine inches high. Canon Europe's metric original agrees closely with the US figures, at 313 mm wide, 181 mm deep and 93 mm high, weighing about 2.6 kg. That is not true of the two vertical M-series units, whose US and regional dimensions do not reconcile. The practical consequence is that this scanner fits under a monitor or on a shelf where a vertical unit will not, at the cost of needing clear space behind it whenever the straight path is used.
