The VRS Elite licence

This part number is not the bare DR-M160II. Canon U.S.A.'s store SKU on this page reads M160II VRSEL, the bundled-software line on Canon's own specification sheet ends Tungsten VRS Elite, and the description string Canon supplies to distributors reads bundled with Kofax VRS Elite. What is being bought is the scanner together with the Virtual ReScan Elite licence, the paid tier of Kofax image enhancement rather than the basic version that ships with the DR-C240. Tungsten Automation is the renamed Kofax, which is why Canon's newer documents say Tungsten where the older ones say Kofax; it is the same software under both names. Anyone comparing this against a quote for a plain DR-M160II is not comparing like with like.

Speed and its condition

Canon rates this scanner at up to 60 ppm simplex and up to 120 ipm duplex, and the footnote on Canon's specification sheet gives the condition in full: typical settings, letter-size documents, portrait-feeding direction, up to 200 dpi. That condition is part of the claim. Canon's US product page prints the same numbers with no condition at all, which is why a bare 60 ppm figure lifted from a product page is not a safe basis for a throughput calculation. All three modes are rated identically here, so black and white, greyscale and 24-bit colour each reach 60 ppm. Note that the DR-M260 carries the same 60 ppm headline measured in landscape feed, which is the easier condition of the two.

Duty cycle

Canon publishes two different suggested daily volumes for this scanner and they do not agree. The Canon U.S.A. specification sheet says up to 13,000 scans; the Canon U.S.A. product page says approximately 7,000 scans. Canon Europe and Canon Middle East both print a band, from 7,500 to 13,000 scans a day, which reads as the reconciliation: the two US figures are points inside one range rather than rival ratings. This listing publishes the range with both endpoints attributed rather than either single number, because the spec-sheet ceiling on its own would place this scanner above the DR-M260 on paper, which is not the positioning Canon's own range supports. Size a workload against the bottom of the band.

Software bundle

The bundle on this model is not the bundle on the others in the range, so it is worth reading rather than assuming. Canon lists ISIS and TWAIN drivers, CaptureOnTouch, Readiris PDF, Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office and Tungsten VRS Elite for Windows. CapturePerfect is absent, which matters because it ships with the DR-M140, the DR-M260 and the DR-C240, so a site standardised on it will not find it here. The macOS side is thinner: Canon gives the Mac a TWAIN driver plus CaptureOnTouch and nothing else. The specification sheet's parenthesis suggesting ISIS for Mac is contradicted by Canon's own product page and by Canon Middle East, so ISIS should be treated as Windows only.

The part is the Exchange Roller Kit, a feed roller plus a retard roller, and Canon U.S.A. currently sells one kit covering this family under the name Exchange Roller Kit SF/C/M/R Series with a store item code rather than a trade part number.
