Which model this is

Our previous listing for this part number carried no model name at all. It read Fujitsu ADF Document Scanner, which named a brand that no longer applies and a model that was never stated. PA03795-B005 is the RICOH fi-800R, confirmed from Ricoh's own material twice: Ricoh's store page for PA03795-B005 is headed fi-800R Color Duplex Document Scanner, and Ricoh's own datasheet carries Part Number: PA03795-B005 against the fi-800R title block. On the brand, PFU renamed the fi-series from Fujitsu to Ricoh on 13 April 2023, so the correct string today is RICOH fi-800R and the manufacturer is PFU America, Inc., a Ricoh company.

Two paper paths

The fi-800R has two ways in and neither is a flatbed. The top path is a 20-sheet automatic feeder with a U-turn, which is the one used for ordinary multi-page batches and which stacks the output for retrieval. The front path runs straight through the body for anything too thick or too stiff to bend around a roller: Ricoh names envelopes, identity cards, booklets and passports, rates it for media up to 5 mm thick and for plastic cards to 1.4 mm, and quotes 3.5 seconds a page through it. That second path is what the scanner is for. It is why the fi-800R turns up at reception desks, branch counters and claims positions, where the job is a driving licence and a folded form rather than a hundred-page batch.

Speed and volume

Ricoh rates the feeder at 40 ppm simplex and 80 ipm duplex, on the conditions it applies across the fi Series: A4 portrait, at 200 or 300 dpi. The ipm figure counts images rather than sheets, so 80 ipm is 40 double-sided pages a minute. Expected daily volume is 4,500 sheets, the lowest of the five fi Series scanners we list, and it is the number to size against rather than the speed. The hopper reinforces the point: 20 sheets on standard 80 g/m² stock, or 30 on lighter 52 g/m², against 100 sheets on every fi-8000 unit. This is a scanner for short jobs done often, not for long unattended batches.

USB only

There is one interface on this scanner and it is USB: USB 3.2 Gen1x1, backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. There is no Ethernet port and no Wi-Fi radio, and neither can be added, so the fi-800R is tied to the machine it is plugged into rather than shared across a department. That is the clearest line between it and the fi-8150, fi-8170, fi-8190 and fi-8270, all of which carry Gigabit Ethernet and can be managed as a fleet through PaperStream NX Manager. If several people need to walk up to one scanner, this is the wrong part number. If it lives at one desk, the absence of a network stack is one less thing to configure. Ricoh sells a 90-degree space-saving USB adapter, CG01000-297601, for tight installations.

Drivers and ISIS

Ricoh ships PaperStream IP with the fi-800R and names the driver set in full: TWAIN, TWAIN x64 and ISIS. The ISIS driver is the one to check for. A site running a legacy capture front end needs an ISIS or TWAIN driver to see the scanner at all, and an ISIS driver is not something a third party can add afterwards, so its absence disqualifies hardware outright. It is included here at no extra cost and no separate purchase. Alongside it Ricoh supplies a WIA driver, an ICA driver for macOS, a SANE driver for Linux, PaperStream Capture for batch work, PaperStream ClickScan for one-touch jobs, the Software Operation Panel and the Error Recovery Guide. Detection differences

The fi-800R detects double feeds with an ultrasonic overlap sensor, which is the mechanism that catches two sheets stuck together by staple holes, static or damp. What Ricoh does not publish for this model is length detection, the second mechanism that flags a page shorter or longer than the batch it was fed with. Both Ricoh sources for the fi-800R list overlap detection alone. The fi-8150, fi-8170, fi-8190 and fi-8270 all publish both, and that claim must not be carried across to this scanner because the units sit in the same catalogue. For mixed batches where a receipt and an invoice go through together, this is the difference worth understanding.

Consumables

Separation here is by pad rather than by the brake roller used on the fi-8000 chassis, and that changes the running cost. Pad unit PA03795-0002 is rated up to 30,000 sheets or one year. Pick roller PA03795-0001 is rated up to 150,000 sheets or one year. So the pad is the short-interval item, needing attention five times as often as the roller, and the 200,000-sheet brake roller figure from the fi-8000 units does not apply to this scanner at all. The ScanAid kit is a different number too: CG01000-295801, not the CG01000-302801 used on the fi-8000 range. A booklet carrier sheet PA03795-0018 and a reverse-path stacker are available as options.

Warranty and box

Three Ricoh sources agree on three years of Advance Exchange for the fi-800R: the store page, the product page and the datasheet. That is the same term the fi-8170 carries and three times the cover on the fi-8190 and the fi-8270, which is worth weighing when a small scanner is being bought for a position that cannot be without one. Advance Exchange ships a replacement before the failed unit goes back. The scanner is TAA Available and EPEAT Silver rated. In the box Ricoh supplies an AC cable, an AC adapter, a USB cable and a Setup DVD-ROM - and no ADF paper chute, because on this model the feeder folds out of the body itself.
