Which model this is

Our previous listing for this part number carried no model name at all. It read Color Duplex Document Scanner and left the buyer to work the rest out. PA03810-B105 is the RICOH fi-8150, confirmed twice from Ricoh's own material: Ricoh's store page for PA03810-B105 is headed fi-8150 Color Duplex Document Scanner, and Ricoh's fi-8150 datasheet prints PN: PA03810-B105 under Standard Model. The brand is the other half of the correction. PFU renamed the fi-series from Fujitsu to Ricoh on 13 April 2023, so the current name is RICOH fi-8150 and a Fujitsu-badged quote for this part number is for this scanner. PFU America, Inc. is the manufacturer, a Ricoh company.

Not a flatbed

One more identity point, because it is wrong in the wild rather than merely missing. The fi-8150 is an ADF and manual-feed scanner with no platen. At least one large retailer's product URL for PA03810-B105 contains the words large format flatbed adf scanner, and that is an artefact of a page slug rather than a description of the hardware. Ricoh's own scanner-type line reads ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) / Manual Feed, Duplex, with no flatbed entry. The flatbed unit in the fi-8000 range is the fi-8270, on part number PA03810-B555, and it is a physically much larger machine at 300 x 577 x 234 mm. If the requirement is a platen for bound books or fragile originals, this is not the part number.

Speed and volume

Ricoh rates the fi-8150 at 50 ppm simplex and 100 ipm duplex, on the conditions it applies across the range: A4 portrait, at 200 or 300 dpi, in colour, grayscale or monochrome alike. Neither figure holds at 600 dpi. The ipm number counts images rather than sheets, so 100 ipm is 50 double-sided pages a minute and not 100 of them; both faces are captured in one pass. Expected daily volume is 8,000 sheets, the lowest of the three scanners in this chassis and the number to size the purchase against. A department putting 12,000 sheets a day through a scanner should be looking at the fi-8190 rather than at this one, whatever the throughput arithmetic suggests.

Against its siblings

The fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190 are one chassis and share more than they differ on: 300 x 170 x 163 mm, 4 kg or 8.8 lb, a 100-sheet feeder, 600 dpi optics, the same media range, the same USB and Gigabit Ethernet pair, the same software bundle. Five things genuinely separate this unit. It runs 50 ppm rather than 70 or 90. It is rated 8,000 sheets a day rather than 10,000 or 13,000. It draws 21 W rather than 28 or 30. Its paper protection is image monitoring without iSOP. And it is EPEAT Silver where the fi-8170 is Gold. The warranty is not one of the differences: this scanner carries the same three years of Advance Exchange the fi-8170 does.

Paper protection

All four fi-8000 units in our range detect double feeds ultrasonically and by document length. Paper protection is where they part company. Ricoh publishes two mechanisms for the fi-8170, fi-8190 and fi-8270 - image monitoring plus sound detection, which Ricoh brands iSOP - and one mechanism for the fi-8150: image monitoring only. The acoustic mechanism listens for a sheet being pulled crooked or beginning to tear and stops the feed before the document is damaged; it is not on this model. That matters on a page like this precisely because these scanners share a chassis, and the sound-detection line is routinely carried across all four in third-party copy.

Drivers and ISIS

Ricoh ships PaperStream IP with the fi-8150 and names the driver set in full: TWAIN, TWAIN x64 and ISIS. The ISIS driver is the one to check for. A site running a legacy capture front end needs an ISIS or TWAIN driver to see the scanner at all, and an ISIS driver is not something a third party can add afterwards, so its absence disqualifies hardware outright. It is included here at no extra cost and no separate purchase. Alongside it Ricoh supplies a WIA driver, an ICA driver for macOS, a SANE driver for Linux, PaperStream Capture for batch work, PaperStream ClickScan for one-touch jobs, the Software Operation Panel and the Error Recovery Guide. Supported operating systems are Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016, macOS and Linux (Ubuntu).

Network and USB

Both interfaces are fitted on this part number: USB 3.2 Gen1x1, backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, and a Gigabit Ethernet port running 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX or 1000BASE-T. The Ethernet is what changes the buying decision, because it makes the scanner a shared departmental device rather than one tied to whichever PC it hangs off, and it is what PaperStream NX Manager and PaperStream Central Admin need in order to push settings and firmware to a fleet from one console. What is not fitted is Wi-Fi. There is no radio in the fi-8150 and none can be added by configuration, so a position with no cable run to it needs one pulled. Ricoh does not put an Ethernet cable in the box either.

Consumables and warranty

Separation on this chassis is by brake roller rather than by a pad, and both wear parts are rated at up to 200,000 sheets or one year: brake roller PA03810-0001, and pick roller set PA03670-0022, which is a set of two rollers. Order the pick roller by that number and not by the one printed on the datasheet. All four fi-8000 datasheets still show PA03670-0002, and Ricoh's own store page for PA03670-0002 states that the part has been discontinued and that the new number is PA03670-0022. A datasheet read straight sends the order to a dead part number. The ScanAid kit is CG01000-302801 and the imprinter is PA03810-D201. Warranty is three years of Advance Exchange, agreed by the store page, the product page and the datasheet, and the scanner is TAA compliant and EPEAT Silver rated.
