The name change

This scanner is a RICOH fi-8170, and it is the same machine much of the trade still calls a Fujitsu fi-8170. PFU announced the change on 13 April 2023: the Ricoh logo replaced the Fujitsu logo on the product, the packaging and the manuals, and Ricoh's own transition page says nothing is changing but the name. The manufacturer is PFU America, Inc., a Ricoh company, so PFU is a company name rather than a brand to put in front of the model. A listing headed Fujitsu Ricoh fi-8170 names two brands where the product carries one. Match on the part number instead. PA03810-B055 is the North American SKU. Ricoh USA lists the same scanner as PA03810-B055-DS, which is an ordering suffix rather than a different product, and regional variants exist under other suffixes, so the full part number is the thing to check on a quote.

Speed and volume

Ricoh rates the fi-8170 at 70 ppm simplex and 140 ipm duplex, on the same conditions it applies across this range: A4 portrait, at 200 or 300 dpi, in colour, grayscale or monochrome alike. Neither figure holds at 600 dpi. The ipm number counts images rather than sheets, so 140 ipm is 70 double-sided pages a minute and not 140 of them. Expected daily volume is 10,000 sheets, and that figure is worth a note on provenance: Ricoh's US datasheet for this model does not print an expected daily volume line at all, so the 10,000 comes from Ricoh's global specification page and from Ricoh USA rather than being borrowed from the fi-8270, which happens to carry the same number.

Against its siblings

The fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190 are one chassis. All three measure 300 x 170 x 163 mm, weigh 4 kg or 8.8 lb, take a 100-sheet feeder, resolve 600 dpi optically and carry the same interfaces and software. This one sits in the middle on speed at 70 ppm against 50 and 90, and on volume at 10,000 sheets a day against 8,000 and 13,000. It is not in the middle on everything else. It is the only EPEAT Gold unit of the three, and it carries three years of Advance Exchange where the faster fi-8190 carries one. On a total-cost view that combination often makes this the better buy than the fi-8190 unless the daily volume genuinely needs 13,000 sheets.

Drivers and ISIS

Ricoh ships PaperStream IP with the fi-8170 and names the driver set in full: TWAIN, TWAIN x64 and ISIS. The ISIS driver is the one to check for. A site running a legacy capture front end needs an ISIS or TWAIN driver to see the scanner at all, and an ISIS driver is not something a third party can add afterwards, so its absence disqualifies hardware outright. It is included here at no extra cost and no separate purchase. Alongside it Ricoh supplies a WIA driver, an ICA driver for macOS, a SANE driver for Linux, PaperStream Capture for batch work, PaperStream ClickScan for one-touch jobs, the Software Operation Panel and the Error Recovery Guide. Supported operating systems are Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016, macOS and Linux (Ubuntu).

Network and USB

Both interfaces are fitted on this part number: USB 3.2 Gen1x1, backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, and a Gigabit Ethernet port running 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX or 1000BASE-T. The Ethernet is what changes the buying decision, because it makes the scanner a shared departmental device rather than one tied to whichever PC it hangs off, and it is what PaperStream NX Manager and PaperStream Central Admin need in order to push settings and firmware to a fleet from one console. What is not fitted is Wi-Fi. There is no radio in the fi-8170 and none can be added by configuration, so a position with no cable run to it needs one pulled. Ricoh does not put an Ethernet cable in the box either.

Government compliance

This is the only unit in our Ricoh range that Ricoh rates EPEAT Gold. Its chassis-mates the fi-8150 and fi-8190, the flatbed fi-8270, the compact fi-800R and the ScanSnap iX1300 are all EPEAT Silver, and the Gold rating gets copied across between them in third-party listings often enough to be worth stating plainly. Ricoh also publishes this scanner as TAA Available, which is the wording that matters where the Trade Agreements Act applies to a federal or state contract. Both facts sit on Ricoh's own fi-8170 page under Federal Government Compliant, and both are worth naming on a bid where a Silver rating or an unstated country of manufacture costs points.

Consumables and options

Separation on this chassis is by brake roller rather than by a pad, and both wear parts are rated at up to 200,000 sheets or one year: brake roller PA03810-0001, and pick roller set PA03670-0022, which is a set of two rollers. Order the pick roller by that number and not by the one printed on the datasheet. All four fi-8000 datasheets still show PA03670-0002, and Ricoh's own store page for PA03670-0002 states that the part has been discontinued and that the new number is PA03670-0022. A datasheet read straight sends the order to a dead part number. One further trap on this model: a search for an fi-8170 ScanAid kit returns two Ricoh store pages. CG01000-302801 is the ScanAid kit. CG01000-306701 is not; it is a one-year protection plan that happens to include a pick roller and a brake roller. The imprinter is PA03810-D201.

Warranty and box

Three Ricoh sources agree on the term here: the store page, the comparison chart on the product page and the datasheet all give three years of Advance Exchange. That is the strongest warranty position of the six scanners in our Ricoh range, and it is three times the cover on the faster fi-8190 and on the more expensive flatbed fi-8270. Advance Exchange means a replacement unit ships before the failed one goes back, rather than the scanner leaving site for repair. In the box Ricoh supplies the ADF paper chute, an AC cable, an AC adapter, a USB cable and a Setup DVD-ROM. There is no Ethernet cable, which catches people out on a network install.
