The name change

This scanner is a RICOH fi-8270, and it is the same machine much of the trade still calls a Fujitsu fi-8270. PFU announced the change on 13 April 2023: the Ricoh logo replaced the Fujitsu logo on the product, the packaging and the manuals, and Ricoh's own transition page says nothing is changing but the name. The manufacturer is PFU America, Inc., a Ricoh company, so PFU is a company name rather than a brand to put in front of the model. A listing headed Fujitsu Ricoh fi-8270 names two brands where the product carries one. Match on the part number instead. PA03810-B555 is the North American SKU. Ricoh USA lists the same scanner as PA03810-B555-DS, which is an ordering suffix rather than a different product, and regional variants exist under other suffixes, so the full part number is the thing to check on a quote.

The flatbed

This is the only scanner in our Ricoh range with a platen, and it is the reason to buy this part number rather than the fi-8170, which has the same feeder and the same speed for less money. The flatbed takes originals up to 215.9 by 297 mm, which is Letter and A4 rather than Legal, and completes a scan in 1.7 seconds at 200 or 300 dpi. Ricoh's own framing is bound periodicals, very thick documents, fragile paper and photographs, all of which an automatic feeder either cannot take or should not be asked to. Worth knowing that the two paths use different optics: the flatbed is a colour CCD with a white LED, while the feeder is a pair of CIS arrays with RGB LEDs, so images from the two paths are not captured by the same hardware.

Speed and volume

Through the feeder Ricoh rates the fi-8270 at 70 ppm simplex and 140 ipm duplex, on the standard conditions for this range: A4 portrait, at 200 or 300 dpi, in colour, grayscale or monochrome. Neither figure holds at 600 dpi. The ipm number counts images rather than sheets, so 140 ipm is 70 double-sided pages a minute. Expected daily volume is 10,000 sheets, the same as the fi-8170 and below the fi-8190's 13,000. The flatbed figure is quoted differently and should not be compared with the others: 1.7 seconds is one scan of one side of one original, because a platen is worked by hand rather than fed.

No macOS support

Two independent Ricoh sources - the fi-8270 datasheet and Ricoh's global specification page - give this scanner's supported operating systems as Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2025 back to 2016 and Ubuntu Linux, with no macOS entry, and give its driver bundle without the Image Scanner Driver for macOS (ICA) that the fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190 datasheets all include. That is a real difference rather than a gap in the paperwork, and it is the classic shared-chassis trap: the flatbed model looks like its ADF-only relatives and is not specified like them. A Mac site that needs a platen should confirm the current position with Ricoh before ordering this part number rather than assume the family behaves as one.

Drivers and ISIS

Ricoh ships PaperStream IP with the fi-8270 and names the driver set in full: TWAIN, TWAIN x64 and ISIS. The ISIS driver is the one to check for. A site running a legacy capture front end needs an ISIS or TWAIN driver to see the scanner at all, and an ISIS driver is not something a third party can add afterwards, so its absence disqualifies hardware outright. It is included here at no extra cost and no separate purchase. Alongside it Ricoh supplies a WIA driver, a SANE driver for Linux, PaperStream Capture for batch work, PaperStream ClickScan for one-touch jobs, the Software Operation Panel and the Error Recovery Guide. There is no macOS driver in that list, which is a real difference from the ADF-only models in the same range and is covered separately below. Supported operating systems are Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016, and Linux (Ubuntu).

Network and USB

Both interfaces are fitted on this part number: USB 3.2 Gen1x1, backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, and a Gigabit Ethernet port running 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX or 1000BASE-T. The Ethernet is what changes the buying decision, because it makes the scanner a shared departmental device rather than one tied to whichever PC it hangs off, and it is what PaperStream NX Manager and PaperStream Central Admin need in order to push settings and firmware to a fleet from one console. What is not fitted is Wi-Fi. There is no radio in the fi-8270 and none can be added by configuration, so a position with no cable run to it needs one pulled. Ricoh does not put an Ethernet cable in the box either.

Consumables and options

Separation on this chassis is by brake roller rather than by a pad, and both wear parts are rated at up to 200,000 sheets or one year: brake roller PA03810-0001, and pick roller set PA03670-0022, which is a set of two rollers. Order the pick roller by that number and not by the one printed on the datasheet. All four fi-8000 datasheets still show PA03670-0002, and Ricoh's own store page for PA03670-0002 states that the part has been discontinued and that the new number is PA03670-0022. A datasheet read straight sends the order to a dead part number. The ScanAid kit is CG01000-302801. Note that the PA03810-D201 imprinter offered on the fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190 is not listed for this model; what Ricoh offers here instead is a black document pad, PA03810-D301, for the flatbed.

Size and warranty

Two numbers to get right before this scanner is ordered. The first is the footprint: 300 by 577 by 234 mm, and 8.8 kg, which is 19.4 lb. That 8.8 is the kilogram figure, and it is a genuine trap in this family, because 8.8 is the pound figure on the fi-8150, fi-8170 and fi-8190, which weigh 4 kg in a chassis 170 mm deep. This scanner is more than twice as heavy and more than three times as deep. The second is the warranty: one year of Advance Exchange, agreed by three Ricoh sources, which is a third of the term on the cheaper fi-8150 and fi-8170. The scanner is TAA compliant and EPEAT Silver rated. In the box are the ADF paper chute, an AC cable, an AC adapter, a USB cable and a Setup DVD-ROM.
