Kit contents

This part number is the scanner on its own: no interface cable, no stand, no power supply. Honeywell's own string reads scanner only, and one distributor spells it out as purchase interface cable separately. The 1250g is corded, so a bare scanner cannot reach a host until a cable is added. There is a trap here worth naming. Honeywell's aggregate ordering table renders 1250G-2 as a USB kit containing an ivory 1250g-1 scanner, which is self-contradictory, and it happens because that table's descriptions sit roughly one row out of step with its part numbers. Four independent sources confirm what this part actually is: scanner only, black. Add the cable and this becomes 1250G-2USB; add the cable and the flex neck stand and it becomes 1250G-2USB-1. The TAA-compliant twin of this bare scanner is 1250G-2-N.

Laser engine

The Voyager 1250g reads with a single-line laser rather than an area imager, and Honeywell prints the decode capability as standard 1D and GS1 DataBar symbologies. It cannot read QR, Data Matrix or PDF417, and no configuration setting adds them. One caution about the documentation is worth having before a specification is written from it: the 1250g User's Guide carries a generic Honeywell symbology appendix listing 2D codes, and that appendix is shared across Honeywell's whole scanner range rather than written for this model. A single scan line cannot decode a 2D symbol whatever an appendix implies. The other thing Honeywell does not publish for the 1250g is a scan rate. The 100 scan lines per second figure belongs to the 1200g and the 1202g, is absent from the 1250g data sheet, and is therefore not quoted here.

Working range

The 1250g is the longer-reaching engine in this range and the depth-of-field table shows it. A 13 mil code reads from contact out to 446 mm (17.6 in), where the 1200g stops at 311 mm, and 10.4 mil reads from 9 to 369 mm (0.4 to 14.5 in). The trade is close-range work: a 5 mil Code 39 needs 57 to 139 mm (2.2 to 5.5 in), so the operator holds the scanner back rather than touching the label, where the 1200g starts at 27 mm. Honeywell's table stops at 13 mil on this model and prints no 20 mil row, so no reach figure for a 20 mil code is claimed. Print contrast is 20% minimum reflectance difference, a tighter requirement than the 1200g's 10%, and light tolerance runs to 75,000 lux.

Build and warranty

This is a corded scanner: no battery, no radio, nothing to charge and nothing to pair. Honeywell rates it for 30 drops to concrete from 1.5 m (5 ft) and publishes no tumble specification, so none appears here. Sealing is IP41, which is one step below the 1200g's IP42 on the second digit and is the specification to check if the counter gets wiped down or sits near a sink. The operating envelope is also narrower than the 1200g's: 0 to 40 C rather than 0 to 50 C, with storage from -20 to 60 C and humidity from 5% to 95% non-condensing. The unit measures 60 by 168 by 74 mm and weighs 133 g (4.7 oz). The factory warranty is five years, matching the 1200g and running two years longer than the cordless 1202g.

Host connections

The 1250g is multi-interface, and the interface is set by the cable rather than by the part number. USB in HID keyboard, serial or IBM OEM modes, RS232 at TTL plus 5 V, keyboard wedge, and RS-232C at plus or minus 12 V are all supported directly. IBM RS485 is supported through an adapter cable, which is a separate line on the order rather than a setting. For a till lane that matters: this scanner can attach to an IBM point-of-sale host without a legacy purchase, provided the right cable is bought. It also means a bench that later moves from a PC to a till needs a cable rather than a new scanner, which is the argument for buying the bare part number where an estate is mixed.

Not the TAA build

This part number does not carry the trailing -N, and that is worth checking before the order goes in. Across the Voyager and Xenon ranges Honeywell uses -N for the build assembled in Mexico that carries the words TAA Compliant in its own description string. No such statement is published against this part number, so it cannot be supplied against a Trade Agreements Act requirement. The TAA-compliant equivalent of this exact kit is 1250G-2-N. For a commercial buyer none of this matters and this is simply the standard part. For a federal agency, a GSA schedule order, a state or local government contract or a subcontract carrying TAA flow-down clauses, ordering this part number instead of the -N build is the single most expensive mistake available on this page, because the hardware arrives correct and still cannot go on the contract.

Where it fits

The 1250g suits retail checkout, pharmacy counters, back-office receiving and any bench reading printed 1D labels, and its particular strength is reach: 446 mm on a 13 mil code lets an operator read a carton on a trolley without leaving the till. Choose the 1200g instead where the work is close-in on fine print, because the 1250g needs 57 mm of standoff on a 5 mil code where the 1200g starts at 27 mm and reads from contact at 10.4 mil. Choose an area imager instead where anything at all in the workflow is 2D, because no setting makes this scanner read a QR code. Choose the cordless 1202g where the code cannot be brought to the counter.
