Kit contents

This kit is the black MFi-certified 1602g pocket scanner with its battery fitted, a Micro USB charge cable 1.2 m long, plus a hand and wrist band. Read the cable line carefully, because the USB token in this part number does not mean what it means elsewhere in this family: the 1602g has no wired host interface at all and talks to its host over Bluetooth, so that lead charges the scanner and carries no data. There is no charging cradle in the box and no Bluetooth access point; both are separately orderable. The wall charger, Honeywell part 50139557, is explicitly optional and is not included, so charging is from a USB port unless one is added. Honeywell also publishes a 1D build of this scanner as 1602G1D-2USB-OS. This part number is the 2D build, and the 2D token is a real capability gate.

Imaging engine

The 1602g is an area imager in a pocket housing, and Honeywell prints Area Image with a 1040 by 720 pixel array for the current revision. The 2D in this part number is a real capability gate rather than marketing shorthand: Honeywell sells a 1D build as well, and the data sheet footnotes its PDF417, Data Matrix and QR rows with the note that only the 2D version supports them. This part number is the 2D version, so those rows apply. Minimum resolution is 3.5 mil on 1D codes, 4 mil on PDF417 and 6 mil on QR or Data Matrix, at symbol contrast as low as 15%. Honeywell publishes no motion tolerance and no pitch, skew or roll figures for this model, unlike the other three imagers in this family, so none are quoted here.

Working range

Working range is published per symbology and it is wider than a pocket scanner suggests. A 20 mil Code 39 reads from 42 to 511 mm (1.7 to 20.1 in), a 13 mil UPC from 39 to 324 mm (1.6 to 12.7 in), and a 20 mil QR code from 24 to 262 mm. Fine marks come in closer: 5 mil Code 39 wants 24 to 202 mm, 6.7 mil PDF417 wants 23 to 177 mm and 10 mil Data Matrix wants 12 to 168 mm. Note that every one of these figures has a minimum as well as a maximum. Unlike the corded Voyagers, this scanner does not read from contact on any symbology, so an operator who touches the label will find nothing decodes. Light tolerance runs from darkness to 100,000 lux.

Radio and battery

This scanner has no wired host interface. It talks over Bluetooth v4.2 with adaptive frequency hopping, Class 1, rated at 50 m (164 ft) line of sight, which is five times the Class 2 range of the Voyager 1202g in the same brand. It presents as an HID keyboard wedge or over Serial Port Profile, supports 84 international keyboards, and is MFi certified, so an iPhone or iPad is a supported host rather than a workaround. The battery is a replaceable 750 mAh lithium-ion pack rated at up to 3,600 scans per charge, or 20 hours at three scans per minute, with a three-hour expected charge time. Every one of those figures comes from the current Rev E data sheet; older copies circulating elsewhere print Bluetooth v2.1 at 10 m and 2,250 scans, and those describe a superseded revision.

Build and warranty

Honeywell rates the 1602g for 30 drops to concrete from 1.4 m (4 ft), which is lower than the rest of this family and reflects what the scanner is: something carried in an apron pocket rather than dropped off a forklift. No tumble specification is published for it. Sealing is IP52. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 C, and Honeywell publishes no storage temperature at all for this model, so none is quoted. The unit is 120 by 48 by 22 mm and weighs under 100 g (3.5 oz). Warranty is three years with one year on the battery, matching the cordless Voyager 1202g and the Xenon XP 1952g rather than the five years carried by the corded 1470g and 1960g.

Suffix and compliance

Two things about this part number cannot be decoded and are not guessed at here. The trailing -OS is undefined: Honeywell's data sheet, Honeywell's product page and five distributors all print the suffix without saying what it means, and it cannot be worked out by contrast either, because every published 1602g kit part number ends in -OS and there is no counterpart to compare against. What is established is that -OS parts are full kits including the cable and the straps. Second, Honeywell's -N convention for TAA-compliant builds does not appear anywhere in the 1602g range, so no TAA claim is made for this scanner. A public-sector buyer with a Trade Agreements Act requirement should have that confirmed by Honeywell before ordering rather than inferred from the part number.

Where it fits

The 1602g suits work where a full-sized handheld is the wrong shape: shop-floor stock checks on a phone or tablet, mobile point of sale, field service, ticketing, inventory counts walked round a site, clienteling on an iPad. Its case rests on the form factor and on MFi certification rather than on speed or ruggedness. Do not choose it for a fixed counter, where a corded scanner costs less and never needs charging, or for a warehouse, where the drop rating and the working range are both short of what a Xenon gives. Note also that the minimum working distance means this is a scanner aimed from a few centimetres away, not laid on a label.
