Kit contents

This part number is the handheld on its own, and on a cordless scanner that matters more than it does on a corded one. Honeywell's own string instructs the buyer to order cradle and cable separately, and the carton holds the scanner with its 2,400 mAh battery, nothing else. The 1952g reaches a wired host through its base, and the base is what carries the USB, keyboard wedge, RS-232 or IBM 46xx connection, so a bare scanner has no wired path to a till or a PC until one is added. It can still pair directly to a Bluetooth host. Order it to add a handset to an existing CCB10 base, or as a replacement; not as a first scanner. The kit version with the presentation base is 1952GSR-2USB-5-N. The high density optics variant of the bare scanner is the 1952GHD build.

Honeywell prints no itemised symbology list for this model, so none is reproduced here.

Optics and range

Standard range optics are the general-purpose choice on the 1952g and they are the reach option. A 20 mil Code 39 reads out to 822 mm (32.4 in) and a 13 mil UPC to 490 mm (19.3 in), so an operator can read a carton at the far side of a counter or a label in a bin without walking to it. The price is fine detail. Honeywell's SR column prints not readable against 5 mil Data Matrix, so this scanner does not read that code at all rather than reading it slowly, and 3 mil Code 39 needs 56 mm of standoff against the HD variant's 27 mm. Buy SR for retail, logistics and general point of sale. If the site has 5 mil Data Matrix on electronics or pharmaceutical packaging, buy the HD variant instead.

Cordless operation

The radio is Bluetooth v4.2 with adaptive frequency hopping at 2.4 GHz, running Class 1 at 100 m line of sight by default and programmable down to Class 2 at 10 m. That is a real choice rather than a specification line: Class 1 buys range, Class 2 buys battery life and reduces interference where several scanners share a room. The battery is a lithium-ion pack of 2,400 mAh minimum, rated at up to 65,000 scans or 18 hours of operation per charge, with a 4.5-hour expected charge time. Honeywell publishes no batch-mode storage capacity for the 1952g, so no figure for scans held out of range is quoted here even though the scanner does hold them. Line of sight is doing real work in the range figure: racking, stock and steel all cost distance.

Build and warranty

Honeywell engineers the 1952g for 50 drops to concrete from 1.8 m (6 ft) and 2,000 tumbles at 0.5 m (1.6 ft), and seals the scanner to IP52. That is a step up from the Voyager laser range at 1.5 m and a step below the Xenon Ultra 1960g, which adds a 3.0 m Mil Spec drop rating on top of the same 1.8 m multiple-drop figure. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 C with storage from -40 to 70 C. The scanner measures 104.1 by 71.1 by 160 mm and weighs 212.62 g. Warranty is where this model differs from its corded relatives and the difference is worth pricing: three years on the scanner and one year on the battery pack, against five years on the 1470g and the 1960g.

TAA compliance

The trailing -N on this part number is the TAA-compliant build, assembled in Mexico, and it is a procurement fact rather than a cosmetic one. Federal agencies, GSA schedule holders, many state and local governments, plus prime contractors flowing Trade Agreements Act clauses down to their suppliers, are required to buy compliant hardware, and a part number without the -N does not satisfy that requirement even though it is the same scanner. Honeywell's own description string for an -N part is character for character identical to the standard build with the words assembled in Mexico, TAA Compliant appended, so the carton contents are unchanged and nothing about the hardware differs. Honeywell renders the region on this range as NA Only. If the buyer is commercial the non-N part is the equivalent; if the buyer is public sector, this is the part number that goes on the contract.

Lifecycle watch

One lifecycle note, stated carefully because Honeywell has published nothing formal. The Xenon XP 1952g does not appear as a discontinued model on Honeywell's own discontinued-products list, and its product page carries no end-of-life banner; it appears on that list only as the replacement for the retired 1902g-BF. Against that, a distributor states that Honeywell has announced the retirement of the Xenon XP 1950g and 1952g premium handhelds with the Xenon Ultra as successor, and the base bundled with the kits is separately flagged end of life by another. No dates have been published by Honeywell, so none are quoted. Treat this as a last-time-buy watch item: sound for a fleet match or a replacement, worth a conversation for a new multi-year rollout.

Where it fits

The 1952g suits work where the scanner has to leave the counter and still reach a wired host: warehouse receiving, back-of-store stock, service counters, light manufacturing. Its case against the corded Xenon Ultra 1960g is the radio; its case against the cordless Voyager 1202g is that it is a 2D imager rather than a 1D laser, ten times the radio range, and far more rugged, at a correspondingly higher price. The case against it is the warranty at three years, and the lifecycle note above. If the deployment is new and expected to run for years, price the Xenon Ultra alongside it before deciding.
