There is no stand and no power supply, and none is needed: the Xenon Ultra 1960g is corded and takes what it needs from the host cable. Note the housing. Honeywell's string for this part number reads black housing, where the sibling 1960GSR-2-N reads black DRH, meaning Disinfectant Ready Housing. That is a real difference between two part numbers in the same range, and the disinfectant-ready claim must not be read across to this one. 1960GSR-2USB-N is this identical kit with standard range optics instead, and it is the right one unless the codes are genuinely small.

Imaging engine

The Xenon Ultra 1960g is an area imager with a 1280 by 1080 pixel array, the highest resolution sensor of the four imagers in this family and a step up from the 1280 by 800 in the cordless Xenon XP 1952g. It reads standard 1D, PDF, 2D, Postal Digimarc, DOT Code and OCR symbologies at print contrast as low as 15%, from darkness up to 100,000 lux. Motion tolerance is 4 m per second and angle tolerance is 360 degrees of roll with 65 degrees of pitch and skew, which together mean the operator drags the item past the window at whatever angle it arrives at. Honeywell publishes no minimum barcode resolution figure for this model, expressing capability through the depth-of-field table instead, so no minimum mil figure is claimed here.

Optics and range

High density optics change what the Xenon Ultra can read. Honeywell's HD column reads 5 mil Data Matrix from 35 to 113 mm, where the standard range column prints not readable against the same row, and it closes in on fine 1D too: 3 mil Code 39 from 18 mm against SR's 34 mm, and 5 mil Code 39 from 7 mm against SR's 23 mm. The price is reach. A 20 mil Code 39 tops out at 814 mm (32.07 in) against SR's 1115 mm, and a 13 mil UPC at 502 mm against SR's 654 mm, which is roughly a quarter to a third less working distance. Buy HD for dense small marks. Do not buy it if the operator needs to reach across a counter or into a pallet.

Build and sealing

The 1960g is the most rugged unit in this family by a clear margin. Honeywell publishes a Mil Spec drop rating of 3.0 m (10 ft) alongside the usual multiple-drop figure of 1.8 m (6 ft) to concrete across the operating temperature range, plus 2,000 tumbles at 0.5 m. For comparison the Xenon XP 1952g is rated to 50 drops at 1.8 m with no Mil Spec figure, and the Voyager XP 1470g to 30 drops at 1.8 m. Sealing is IP52 on the scanner. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 C with storage from -40 to 70 C. The unit measures 108.2 by 70.4 by 160.2 mm and weighs 147.2 g (5.2 oz). The corded 1960g carries a five-year factory warranty.

Host connections

Honeywell publishes three host interfaces for the Xenon Ultra 1960g: USB, keyboard wedge and RS-232. Note what is not on that list. The Xenon XP 1952g and the Voyager XP 1470g both add IBM 46xx over RS485 for legacy point-of-sale lanes, and Honeywell's 1960g data sheet does not, so a site with IBM till lanes should confirm the requirement with Honeywell before standardising on this model. The interface is set by the cable rather than by the part number, which is why the bare 1960GSR-2-N exists at all: it lets a site hold one scanner and cable it for whichever host it meets. The two USB kits arrive already cabled for USB Type A on a 3 m straight lead.

TAA compliance

The trailing -N on this part number is the TAA-compliant build, assembled in Mexico, and it is a procurement fact rather than a cosmetic one. Federal agencies, GSA schedule holders, many state and local governments, plus prime contractors flowing Trade Agreements Act clauses down to their suppliers, are required to buy compliant hardware, and a part number without the -N does not satisfy that requirement even though it is the same scanner. Honeywell's own description string for an -N part is character for character identical to the standard build with the words assembled in Mexico, TAA Compliant appended, so the carton contents are unchanged and nothing about the hardware differs. Honeywell renders the region here as NA/MX Only. If the buyer is commercial the non-N part is the equivalent; if the buyer is public sector, this is the part number that goes on the contract.

Where it fits

The Xenon Ultra 1960g suits work that punishes hardware and still needs a wired connection: warehouse receiving, manufacturing lines, distribution centres, busy retail lanes, and clinical settings where the disinfectant-ready housing is offered. Its case over the Voyager XP 1470g is reach, sensor resolution and the 3.0 m Mil Spec drop rating; its case over the cordless Xenon XP 1952g is a longer warranty at five years, no battery to manage, plus the lifecycle certainty of a current generation rather than a range with a reported retirement. The case against it is price, and the absence of IBM 46xx from its published host list.
