What Is Included

MK9540-32A38 is a complete kit, and the stand is the part buyers most often do not realise is included. Three items ship under this one part number: the black VoyagerCG 9540 scanner, the 46-46128 stand, and a coiled low-speed USB direct cable. Note that the cable is coiled rather than straight, which matters if the scanner has to reach across a wide counter. There is no external power supply, and none is needed on USB: the scanner draws its power from the host port. Dropped into the stand it works hands-free; lifted out, it reverts to handheld without any configuration.

CodeGate

CodeGate is what the CG in VoyagerCG stands for and it is a real functional difference, not a badge. With CodeGate active the scanner reads a barcode as soon as it is presented but transmits nothing until the operator presses the button. In a stand, on a busy counter, that stops the scanner firing off whatever happens to drift through its beam and dumping stray characters into the point-of-sale system. Anyone who has watched a presentation scanner read the barcode on a passing customer's loyalty card at exactly the wrong moment will recognise the problem it solves.

Laser, Not an Imager

The VoyagerCG 9540 is a single-line 650 nm laser. It reads standard 1D barcodes and GS1 DataBar, and it does not read 2D symbologies: no QR, no Data Matrix, no PDF417, and nothing off a phone screen. Read range tops out at 254 mm on a 21 mil code and is shorter on the denser sizes, so this is a near-field scanner for counter work rather than one for reading a placard across a warehouse aisle. For pure 1D retail, pharmacy and back-office scanning it remains quick and comfortable.

Lifecycle and Replacement

Honeywell has placed the VoyagerCG 9540 on its discontinued products list with an end-of-build date of June 2024, a last renewal date of December 2026 and end of service in December 2027. Honeywell names the Voyager 1200g as the replacement, and it is a like-for-like corded 1D handheld. Note that some distributor channel data for this part reads 'EOL, no replacement'; Honeywell's own table names one, and Honeywell is the authority on its own lifecycle. Remaining stock suits fleet matching and spares where introducing a new model would mean re-testing an integration.

Cable and Interface

The 9540 body is multi-interface: USB, RS-232, Keyboard Wedge, IBM 46xx over RS-485, OCIA and laser emulation are all supported, and the fitted cable decides which is active. This kit ships the USB cable, so out of the box it is a USB scanner. Cables are replaceable, so a later move to a serial or wedge host is a cable purchase rather than a scanner purchase. Note that RS-232 and certain wedge configurations need an external power supply that is not included here. Honeywell publishes no IP rating for this model, only that the housing resists airborne particulate contaminants.
