Key Features

  • Prints a 4.25-inch (108 mm) wide label at up to 10 inches per second at 203 dpi.
  • Thermal transfer configuration that also runs plain direct thermal media.
  • A 2.36-inch monochrome LCD with a physical keypad, built for gloved hands and dust.
  • Ethernet, USB host, USB device and an RS-232 DB9 serial port are all standard.
  • Universal firmware speaks Fingerprint, Direct Protocol, IPL, ZSim2 for ZPL-II, and DPL.
  • An 800 MHz Arm Cortex-A7 with 256 MB of flash and 256 MB of DDR3 runs the print engine.
  • Takes an 8-inch media roll on a 3-inch or 1-inch core, and a 450 m ribbon.
  • Tear-off only on this part number: no cutter, no peeler, no rewinder.
  • Certified FCC Class A for commercial and industrial premises rather than residential.
  • Thermal transfer prints that outlast direct thermal, for asset tags and long-life labelling.
  • Media and ribbon are sold separately, so stock can be matched to the job rather than bundled.
  • Backed by a one-year Honeywell factory warranty on the printer.

Which configuration this is

This part number is the keypad build of the PD45S. It carries a 2.36-inch monochrome LCD with physical buttons, and that is the only thing separating it from PD45S0F0010000200, which has a 3.5-inch color touch screen for about $150 more. Print engine, resolution, speed, ports and media handling are identical. Physical keys are the better answer in a cold store, in a dusty plant, or anywhere operators wear gloves, because a keypad does not care about any of those things and a touch panel can.

Speed and print engine

The PD45S is the 10 inch per second member of the PD45 family; the plain PD45 tops out at 8 ips and Honeywell's own configuration guide heads that section 'PD45 ICON 2 - 8 IPS'. Distributor copy and photography are frequently shared between the two, so check the part number rather than the picture. At 203 dpi this printer runs from 2 to 10 inches per second across a 4.25-inch print width, and a single label can run to 4.8 metres. Behind it sits an 800 MHz Arm Cortex-A7 with 256 MB of flash and 256 MB of DDR3, which is what keeps throughput up when labels carry heavy graphics.

Interfaces and expansion

Ethernet, a USB host port, a USB device port and an RS-232 DB9 female serial port are all standard on this configuration. There is no wireless on this part number and none can be assumed: Wi-Fi is an optional module that occupies a rear slot and is not fitted here, and Honeywell documents no Bluetooth option for the PD45S at all. Never treat this as a wireless printer. The rear panel also carries empty slots for a parallel IEEE 1284 port and an industrial or applicator interface card with GPIO, so the machine can be extended later if the line changes.

Media and ribbon

Tear-off only. There is no cutter, no peel-off assembly, no rewinder and no label taken sensor on this part number, and that is worth being blunt about because the peel and rewind version is a different code entirely. Media runs from 20 to 114 mm wide at 3 to 10 mil thick, taking non-continuous, black-mark, tag, guide-hole, notch and continuous stock from an 8-inch roll on either a 3-inch or a 1-inch core. Ribbon goes up to 450 metres on a 1-inch core in wax, mixed or resin, and the printer accepts it wound coated side in or coated side out, which saves matching your existing ribbon stock to the machine.

Certification and build

One specification worth checking against your site: the PD45S is certified FCC Class A, not Class B. Class A covers commercial and industrial premises; Class B is the residential rating. The PX45 and PM65 in this range are Class B, so this is a genuine difference between them and it is routinely omitted from distributor listings. Operating range is 5 to 40 degrees Celsius at 20 to 85 percent relative humidity, non-condensing. The printer measures 438 by 270 by 249 mm and weighs 9.25 kg, or 20.4 pounds. Distributors publish 23.85 pounds, which is almost certainly the packed weight.

Printhead life

Honeywell does not publish a printhead life rating for this printer, so we do not quote one. What Honeywell does publish is a warranty term: printheads are covered for one year or one million inches of print, whichever comes first. Those are different things, and the figure gets repeated as a life expectancy across a good deal of the trade. Treat it as what it is. In practice printhead life on any thermal printer is governed by the media and ribbon you run, the darkness setting and how clean the head is kept, far more than by any number on a datasheet. Media and ribbon are sold separately on this printer, which means you can specify stock that suits the head rather than inheriting whatever was bundled.

What is included

Honeywell does not publish a package contents list for the PD45S, so we will tell you what is confirmed and what is not rather than pad the list. Confirmed in the carton: the printer and a mains power cord with a C13 connector, which the final digits of the part number specify. Confirmed NOT in the carton: labels and ribbon, both sold separately, and the cutter, peel-off and rewinder options, none of which exist on this configuration. Not established either way: whether a USB cable or printed documentation is supplied. Ask us before you order if that matters and we will check it for you.

For a plant, warehouse or production line that needs a dependable 4-inch industrial printer on the network, the Honeywell PD45S PD45S0C0010000200 is a solid choice at a sensible price. Contact us to learn more or secure this solution for your business today.
