Which configuration this is

This is the base configuration of the PX45, and knowing what is absent matters as much as what is present. Position 7 of the part number is zero, which means Ethernet only: there is no Wi-Fi radio and no Bluetooth. Both I/O expansion slots are empty, so there is no parallel port, no RFID board and no industrial or applicator interface. Media handling is zero as well, so no cutter, rewinder, peeler or label taken sensor. The family datasheet lists all of those as available options, which means generic PX45 copy will describe capabilities this particular unit does not have. Everything listed is field-installable later. One correction worth stating plainly: this printer does not have a touch screen. Honeywell's PX45/PX65 Configuration Guide names this exact part number “2.36 in LCD with Keypad”, and the PX45 ordering matrix carries no display option at all. The “full touch” wording that circulates for this printer comes from a line in the family datasheet that is shared with the PM45 and PM65.

Speed and print engine

The PX45 is the fast one. At 203 dpi it runs from 100 to 300 millimetres per second, which is 4 to 12 inches per second, and prints 4.4 inches wide on direct thermal media or 4.3 inches on thermal transfer. Note the minimum as carefully as the maximum: this printer will not go below 4 ips. A PD45S or a PM65 will drop to 2 ips, and if you run difficult synthetic stock that needs a slow pass, that difference decides the machine. Memory is 512 MB of flash and 256 MB of SDRAM with 256 MB user-partitionable. Honeywell does not publish the processor or a maximum print length, so we do not quote either.

Interfaces and expansion

Ethernet at 10/100, a USB 2.0 host port, a USB 2.0 device port and RS-232 up to 115.2 kilobaud are standard. One distributor publishes gigabit Ethernet for this printer; Honeywell's datasheet says 10/100 and the manufacturer wins. The two empty expansion slots are the real story on this configuration, because they mean the printer can grow into a parallel host, a UHF RFID encoder, an industrial interface with opto inputs and relay outputs, or an applicator interface in Z, S or I style, all field-installable. Buy the base unit now, add the board when the line needs it.

Media and ribbon

Media runs from 25.4 to 120 mm wide at 2.4 to 10 mil thick, roll-fed or fan-fold, on a roll up to 213 mm in diameter with a core between 38 and 76 mm. Ribbon takes an 80 mm maximum outer diameter in wax, mid-range or resin, and Honeywell's quick start guide illustrates loading it coated side in or coated side out. Honeywell does not publish a maximum ribbon length or core size for the PX45, and we will not borrow the 450 metre figure from the PD45S or PM65 to fill the gap, because they are different machines. Ask us with your ribbon part number and we will confirm the fit.

Certification and build

The PX45 is FCC Class B certified and Energy Star 3.0 qualified, and carries CE under the EMC, low voltage and RoHS directives. Operating range is 5 to 40 degrees Celsius at 10 to 90 percent relative humidity, non-condensing, with storage from minus 20 to 70 degrees. The printer measures 482 by 238 by 275 mm and weighs 12.61 kg, or 27.87 pounds; a distributor figure of 32.5 pounds is packed weight. One more thing worth flagging: at least one large distributor files this part number under model PX4i. That is the previous generation and appears nowhere in this printer's lineage.

Printhead life

Honeywell does not publish a printhead life rating for this printer, so we do not quote one. What Honeywell does publish is a warranty term: printheads are covered for one year or one million inches of print, whichever comes first. Those are different things, and the figure gets repeated as a life expectancy across a good deal of the trade. Treat it as what it is. In practice printhead life on any thermal printer is governed by the media and ribbon you run, the darkness setting and how clean the head is kept, far more than by any number on a datasheet. Media and ribbon are sold separately on this printer, which means you can specify stock that suits the head rather than inheriting whatever was bundled.
