Two displays

The second screen is what this part number is for. The main display is a colour 3.5 in IPS LCD at 320 by 240; the second is a colour 2.4 in LCD at 240 by 320, mounted portrait, and it exists to hold busy lamp field indicators and contacts so the primary screen stays free for the call in progress. That is a genuinely different phone from a single-screen unit with a paging key, because the monitored extensions are visible continuously rather than one page at a time. If the user is a receptionist, a dispatcher or an executive assistant watching a floor, this is the specification that justifies the price. If nobody is watching anybody, it is money spent on a screen that will show a wallpaper.

Counting the keys

Line-key arithmetic on this model confuses almost every listing that touches it, so here it is from Poly's own comparison table. There are 14 physical line keys: eight beside the main display and six beside the second. The main display shows 8 and supports 32; the second shows 6 and supports 12. Total capacity is therefore 44 line and contact positions. That means the E450 is neither an 8-line phone nor a 12-line phone, and describing it as either understates it. Where 44 is still not enough, one Poly Edge E expansion module is supported. Poly's datasheet confirms the capability but its ordering table lists only the two phones and three regional power supplies, so the module part number has to be confirmed before it goes on an order.

Wireless on board

The E450 is the wireless member of the E400 pair and that is the whole reason to choose it over an E400. Wi-Fi covers both bands, 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz for 802.11b, g and n at HT-20, and 5.15 to 5.825 GHz for 802.11a and n at HT-20 or HT-40. Bluetooth 5.0 is integrated and does both headset pairing and mobile phone pairing, which the E400 does not. Poly's own positioning line for this model adds the words or home office where the E400 column omits them, and that is exactly the Wi-Fi difference showing up in the marketing. For a home worker with no structured cabling, or a hot desk in a fitted-out space with no free drop, that radio is the product.

Power over Ethernet

The phone runs from a standard PoE port at 13 W maximum and needs no adapter on a switch that supplies power. There is no power supply in the carton and that is the intended configuration rather than a shortfall. One caution on the numbers: Poly's own datasheet prints IEEE 802.3af together with Class 4, which cannot both be correct, because 802.3af defines Classes 0 to 3 and Class 4 belongs to 802.3at. That line reproduced identically across two independent passes, so it is an error in Poly's published document rather than a transcription slip, and no class number is stated on this page as a result. Budget the 13 W figure, and check headroom on an older switch, because this phone also runs two radios.

Open SIP only

HP's knowledge base lists the platform column for the Edge E450 as Open SIP and nothing else, and a directly worded second pass asking whether Microsoft Teams appears as a supported platform answered no. There is no Teams variant and no Skype for Business variant of this phone at any part number, so a Microsoft-first estate is a different purchase rather than a different order code. The deployment tooling is the same Edge E platform as the E300: central provisioning over FTP, FTPS, TFTP, HTTP or HTTPS, provisioning and call server redundancy, event logging, syslog, hardware diagnostics and status reporting, with SIP per RFC 3261. HP publishes Zoom and Google Voice certifications for the Edge E Series at series level.

In the box

Poly's list is the console, the handset, the handset cord, a CAT-5E network cable, the desk stand and a setup sheet, with Microban antimicrobial protection named individually against the console, the handset and the handset cord. Two passes returned that list identically. Three things are not in the carton and each generates a call: there is no power supply, no expansion module and no wall-mount kit. The phone is wall mountable and Poly says so, but the kit is a separate order with no part number in this datasheet. Published figures of 25.8 by 30.6 by 8.8 cm and 1.11 kg are the SHIPPING BOX, and Poly qualifies the weight as including product, accessories and documents.

Where it fits

Poly positions the E450 for enterprise professionals working from the office or a home office who rely heavily on contact keys, and that is a fair reading of the hardware. Buy it where somebody genuinely watches other people's lines all day, or where the desk has no wired drop and the Wi-Fi radio is doing the work. Buy it where a Bluetooth headset needs to pair straight to the phone rather than through a PC. Do not buy it as a general-issue desk phone: for a user who makes and takes their own calls, the second screen and the radios are cost without function, and the single-screen Edge E300 does that job on the same platform with the same provisioning and the same firmware.
