Resolution and speed

The single most important fact about this part number is that it is a GX430t and not a GX420t. The two printers are the same size, the same shape and the same colour, and they sit side by side in Zebra's own literature, but this one has a 300 dpi head and tops out at 4 inches per second while the 203 dpi unit reaches 6. Distributor feeds get this wrong regularly, and a line planned around 6 ips on a 300 dpi printer will miss its throughput by a third. What the extra resolution buys is real: 300 dpi is where small point sizes stay legible, where dense 2D codes verify reliably, and where a logo prints as a logo rather than as a staircase.

Print method

The t in GX430t is the thermal transfer mechanism, and it means this printer has a ribbon path fitted. That is not a restriction. A thermal transfer printer also prints direct thermal, so the same unit handles a wax-resin label meant to survive a year on a chemical drum and a plain direct thermal shipping label with no ribbon loaded at all. The direct-thermal-only sibling in this family is the GX420d, and it cannot be converted the other way. Ribbon capacity is 244 ft on a half-inch core with a 1.36 inch maximum roll diameter, which is a desktop-sized supply rather than an industrial one and is the practical limit on unattended run length.

Connections fitted

This configuration carries three interfaces and all of them are fitted rather than optional: an RS-232 serial port on a DB-9 connector, USB, and an internal ZebraNet 10/100 Ethernet print server. The Ethernet is the reason to choose this part number over a cheaper one, because it lets the printer sit on the network and serve several workstations rather than hanging off one PC. The serial port is the reason it still turns up in production: scales, applicators and older terminals speak RS-232 and nothing else. What this printer does not have is Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and neither can be added by configuration.

Media handling

Tear-off is the whole story on this part number. Zebra's own record for GX43-102410-000 states no additional media-handling options, which means no label dispenser and no cutter. Both exist in the GX family, but they arrive on their own part numbers as factory builds rather than as kits to be added later, so a line that needs cut labels needs a different order rather than an upgrade. Media runs from 0.75 to 4.25 inches wide on a 5-inch maximum roll with a half-inch core, and thickness from 0.003 to 0.0075 inches. That roll capacity is the other desktop constraint worth planning around.

Zebra ships this printer complete, which is worth stating because a good number of desktop printers do not. The carton holds the printer, the power supply, a power cord for the region, a USB cable, a ribbon core and a cleaning pen, along with documentation and software. That means a unit ordered on its own can be unpacked and printing over USB the same afternoon without a second order for a cable or a brick. The ribbon core matters more than it sounds: a thermal transfer printer needs a take-up core to run ribbon at all, and having one in the box saves a call. What is not included is ribbon or labels.

Discontinued status

Zebra has discontinued this printer and names the ZD621t at 300 dpi with Ethernet as its replacement, which is a like-for-like step: same resolution, same print width, same interface set, in a current chassis with a longer supported life. Buying a GX430t today is a deliberate decision rather than a default one, and there are good reasons for it. Matching an existing fleet so that one spare covers every bench, replacing a failed unit without requalifying label formats, and keeping a validated process untouched are all sound. Starting a new deployment on it is not, because support and parts availability only shorten from here.
