Printer class

Zebra positions the ZT510 as the successor to the 105SL and 105SL Plus, and that lineage says more about the machine than any single specification. Those printers were bought to run continuously in production, and the ZT510 inherits the brief: an all-metal frame, 50 lb of it, a duty cycle meant for shifts that do not stop, and the memory and interfaces to be managed centrally rather than nursed individually. It is a genuinely different class of machine from the ZT220, which is often marketed alongside it as though the two were tiers of one product. They are not. The ZT220 is an entry industrial printer and this is a production one.

Speed and print length

Twelve inches per second at 203 dpi is double the ZT220 and it is the specification most buyers are actually paying for. On a line applying labels to cases as they pass, print speed sets the line speed, and the difference between 6 and 12 ips is the difference between one printer and two. Speed is programmable down to 2 ips, which matters for fine 2D codes that verify better printed slowly. Maximum print length is 150 inches at this resolution. Note that the 300 dpi ZT510 build runs 2 to 10 ips rather than 12, so a quotation for a 300 dpi unit should not carry this figure.

Media handling fitted

This part number is the tear-off build, which Zebra's own configuration string for it confirms. Two other media-handling builds exist and neither is a kit: rewind, which internally rewinds a full roll of printed labels on a 3-inch core or peels and rewinds liner, and cutter, a front-mount guillotine with a catch tray. Both arrive as their own part numbers ordered from the factory. That is the standard industrial-printer trap and it is worth settling before the purchase order rather than after: a line that will eventually need cut labels should specify a cutter build now, because converting a tear-off machine later means buying most of a printer.

Memory and languages

512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of on-board linear Flash is a large allocation by industrial-printer standards and it exists for a reason. A production printer holds resident fonts, stored label formats, graphics and often ZBI programs on the machine itself, so that a host sends a few bytes of variable data rather than a whole label every time. That is what keeps a 12 ips printer fed. It speaks ZPL and ZPL II with ZBI 2.0 for on-printer logic and XML-enabled printing for direct integration with ERP output.
