Key Features

  • Genuine Zebra part, carried by part number in Zebra's LI36X8 Product Reference Guide and DS81xx accessory guide.
  • This cable REQUIRES an external 12 V power supply. It does not run on host USB power alone.
  • Three further part numbers are needed to use it: a power supply, a DC line cord and an AC line cord.
  • USB Series A host connector plus a 12 V DC power input, 7 ft or 2.1 m, straight.
  • Verified by Zebra for the LI3608 and LI3678 linear imagers and listed for the DS8108 and DS8178.
  • Shielded construction.
  • Zebra's own guide misprints the length as 2.8 m. Seven feet is 2.1 m.

Needs a supply

The defining fact about this part is that it does not work on its own. Unlike an ordinary USB scanner cable, this one requires an external 12 V supply, and Zebra's DS81xx accessory guide spells out the full order: the Zebra PWR-BGA12V50W0WW 12 V 50 W power supply power supply, a CBL-DC-375A1-01 DC line cord, and the Zebra 23844-00-00R grounded AC line cord country-specific AC line cord, all sold separately. That is four part numbers for one working connection. We stock three of the four; the CBL-DC-375A1-01 DC line cord is the one to source alongside. Anyone who has ordered this cable expecting to plug a scanner into a PC has ordered the wrong cable.

The other cable

For most scanners the right part is the Zebra CBA-U21-S07ZBR shielded USB cable, which is the same shielded USB Series A cable at the same 7 ft length, bus-powered from the host, needing nothing else at all. The two part numbers differ by three characters and the products differ by an entire power chain. The powered cable exists for a specific reason: some Zebra scanners and cradles draw more current than a USB port will supply, particularly when charging a cordless handset, and a powered cable delivers that current without a separate charger. If the scanner in question is corded and the host is a standard PC, that reason does not apply and the bus-powered cable is cheaper and simpler.

Verified compatibility

Zebra's own LI36X8 Linear Scanner Product Reference Guide lists this part for the LI3608 corded and LI3678 cordless linear imagers, returned identically across two independently worded reads, and Zebra's DS81xx Technical Accessory Guide lists it under standard cables for the DS8108 and DS8178. That is narrower verification than the bus-powered CBA-U21-S07ZBR carries, which appears in four separate guides, so the compatibility claim here is deliberately limited to what Zebra actually prints. As with the other cable, Zebra does not state the scanner-end connector type in any of its own documents.

A Zebra misprint

Zebra's LI36X8 Product Reference Guide prints the length of this cable as 7 ft (2.8 m). Seven feet is 2.1 metres, so that conversion is wrong inside Zebra's own document, and the bad figure has propagated into third-party marketplace listings that copy it. Zebra's DS81xx guide gives the correct 7 ft and 2.1 m. The cable is 7 ft. One further note from the channel rather than from Zebra: a filter adapter cable, CBL-36-453A-01, is reported as required when using this cable together with the CBL-DC-375A1-01 DC line cord on some configurations. Confirm it against the guide for the specific scanner before ordering.
