Key Features

  • USB Series A host connector, 7 ft or 2.1 m, straight rather than coiled.
  • Supports BC1.2 USB battery charging negotiation.
  • Verified for the DS4608, DS8108, DS8178, DS9900 Series and the DS3600 Series.
  • Shielded construction, which is what the S in the part number denotes.

Which cable this is

Zebra sells two shielded USB Series A scanner cables at 7 ft that read almost identically on a parts list, and choosing the wrong one costs a second order and a delay. This is the bus-powered one. It draws everything the scanner needs from the USB port on the host, so it is the whole solution: plug it into the scanner and into the PC and the job is done. The other cable, the Zebra CBA-U42-S07PAR powered USB cable, requires an external 12 V power supply plus a DC line cord plus an AC line cord before it works at all. If a scanner has been ordered without a cable, this is almost always the part that was meant.

Verified compatibility

This part number appears in four separate Zebra-authored accessory guides: the DS81xx guide covering the DS8108 and DS8178, the DS9908 guide covering the DS9900 Series hybrid scanners, the DS4608 guide, and the DS3600 Series guide. That is manufacturer-level confirmation across four product families rather than a distributor's compatibility claim. It is also the cable Zebra puts in its own factory kits: the DS4608-SR7U2100AZW, DS4608-SR7U2100SGW and LI2208-SR7U2100SGN kits all ship this exact part, which is the strongest possible evidence for a scanner and cable pairing.

What is not published

Zebra does not state the scanner-end connector type for this cable in any of its own documents. A distributor describes the part as RJ-50 to USB, and RJ-50 is the usual termination on Zebra handheld scanners, but that is channel information rather than a manufacturer specification and it is reported here as such. There is also a genuine disagreement inside Zebra's own material about the shielding: the DS9908 and DS82 Series guides print shielded USB against this part while the DS81xx and DS4608 guides print only USB cable. The part descriptor itself carries the S, so shielded is the reading taken here, but two Zebra guides do not say it.

Length and form

Seven feet, or 2.1 metres, straight rather than coiled. Straight is the right choice for a scanner that sits in a stand or lives on a counter, because a coiled cable is always pulling the handset back toward the host and that fights the operator across a shift. A coiled cable earns its keep only where the cable would otherwise lie in a working area and get caught. Note that Zebra's own LI36X8 Product Reference Guide prints 7 ft as 2.8 m against the sibling powered cable, which is an arithmetic error in Zebra's document that has propagated into third-party listings. Seven feet is 2.1 metres.
